ENGLISH VERSION

Hi Fabio, it’s a real pleasure to interview you here on Parkett. Your journey starts right here in Italy. When did you start clubbing and where did you move your first DJ steps?

Hi guys, the pleasure is all mine, I’m definitely a fan! I started hanging out at clubs in Italy at the age of 17 years (more or less) and let’s say that from the first Sunday afternoon at the Genesis (Prato) I still have to stop hehe! When I was 20 I moved to London where I started to take my first steps as a DJ. I used to play “live” with machines and controllers because I was only producing at the time and I had a huge baggage of music, loops and edits.

I started out in club bars in East London, I remember the first one ever, it was called the Russian Bar in Shoreditch. My real experience, though, started when I became resident of a club in my hometown, “Club999”, what a time!

You have been a permanent resident in Berlin for a long time.  What prompted you to move to the capital of Germany?

I think the main reason was to pursuit my dream. After four years in London and four seasons in Ibiza, I felt I was evolving as a person and as an artist, but the place that I was in didn’t reflected my evolution anymore. After a first comprehensive tour, Berlin was the obvious choice. Here I feel exactly where I’m supposed to be. The city is full of all kinds of events, everywhere I turn I feel the history, the past and future, Techno culture, many artists and people from all over the world each one with his dream and all united in the same small town. All this is really inspiring my music and the my growth. Do not underestimate the opportunity to listen to long Dj sets in clubs where you could go without a phone and if you want to get in the middle of the track and no one will ever interfere with your connection to music. I have to say I feel really comfortable here, I wouldn’t change that for nothing in the world, even though the hand of “business” has also entered Berlin and many clubs are closing down, rents are getting higher, taxes are getting tougher… too bad!

The whole world celebrates German music scene, do you think there is really a big difference from the Italian one?

I honestly don’t know. On the contrary, I’m inclined to say no, nowadays there’s not much difference… there are incredible producers that are popping up all over the world (Italy included) and well established among the first places in my opinion. In the end it all depends on taste, there will never be a better place than another because it is difficult to evaluate music in an objective way. Digging deep probably a relevant but underestimate reason is “time” factor. From what I see in Berlin there are hundreds of producers who in one way or another get away with odd jobs and devote a lot of time to music, thanks to the many benefits that the city offers. Some of them rent a studio and practically live in it! In Italy I have a lot of friends and acquaintances with enormous potential but with jobs of 40 (or more) hours a week… which certainly makes the production process longer and more complex.

At the end of last year you embarked on the Italian tour “Plus8”, joining the great Richie Hawtin, an artist who started to believe in you from the first moment you met. What feelings and emotions has this experience left you?

Emotions are almost impossible to put on paper. Following Richie around my country as a tour guide was fantastic. Everything was perfect in every detail. The smiles, the energy, the passion of every promoter we met along the way reminded me that Italy and Italians are people who can do things really well and with a lot of heart when they want to. Many old and new friends have filled me with happiness at every stage! A++! The tour ended at Goa in Rome, and the closing date was exactly on my birthday. At midnight I left the console to Rich, he opened with a trace of mine and a surprise cake arrived…amazing!

You will soon launch your own record label called “RUNA”. A name that recalls a halo of mystery and mysticism. What kind of music would you like to promote through this label?

Yes, the day I’ve been waiting for is coming. The word RUNA comes from an ancient population living in the Andes of Peru since 2000A.C., they were among the first to realize and believe that everything around us has its own spirit, its own vital essence in the form of vibration and frequency, from stones to rivers to mountains… everything! A human being becomes a RUNA when he is able to become aware of these vibrations. The music will range from Techno and Ambient, combined with organic sounds, from nature, ancestral Asian and Latin American instruments. I’m studying (as an autodidact) the relationship between the different frequencies and what they can unleash on the human body and the environment, so every track I’ll publish with the label will bring some of this new knowledge with it as I explore it. For me it’s really incredible and a total novelty to sit in the studio and start a track based on what frequency bands I want to use instead of doing it by ear or randomly, it may seem trivial to some people but I’ve never thought about it!

The launch of “RUNA” will take place on February 20th with the release of “Subtle Realms”. The work is composed of four elements, under your alias Selcouth. Tell us a bit about this project.

First of all, it’s gonna be a collaboration. I’ve decided that instead of separating one or more aliases from my name as it’s almost always done, I want them to be collaborations. I don’t want all this effort to get lost in an alias and not have my name appear on streaming portals. I want it to be clear that these various branches are all part of me and that I have nothing to hide. So, Selcouth. It’s the most introverted part that comes out, techno faster in bpm and loaded with pads, sometimes strong but also meditative, combined with field recordings. The aim is  to create Techno with meaning and elevation, let’s say, hopefully inspiring for some. I decided to separate the tracks I’ve done in the last months of creativity in EP’s made by four tracks where there will always be something for the dance floor, something to travel, something to dream, to discover. I can already tell you that there will be more aliases!

Looking back at your journey… Is there any episode or anecdote that you think particularly affected you to the point of sharing it with our readers?

I have one that really changed my life radically. More than an episode it was a process: the detachment from expectations and confusion induced by fashion, people and social media! I was literally stuck for two years (and without even knowing it), in a mental confusion that led me not to be my best version as producer, DJ, person. A whirlwind of information, indications, seeing what “the others” do and how they do it, giving too much weight to the advice of all the people around me (not maliciously, of course), but it made me forget who I was, what I really wanted, even what music I wanted to play, until the day I opened my eyes, it was like being born again. The process was long but the moment of “click” was one. Seeing everything clearly and seeing how all those voices about what you have to do or should do to be “successful” didn’t allow me to draw on my creative energy. The day I stopped to be anxious about success and put a limit on socials was the day I started making music that I really feel is mine. Both in the studio and DJ sets. RUNA comes form this experience and this new chapter is much more Techno than the Fabio you know. Now I’m floating and I don’t care if one month I have few dates, if someone doesn’t understand or won’t understand what I’m doing. Now I know that the important thing is to stay sincere and authentic with myself. To have a life full of beautiful things and not just a head full of career-related thoughts, when you are happy regardless of your job, then the job itself will benefit a lot!

Are there any other future projects you would like to talk about?

Many things in the future but I’ll stop here for now. I would like to conclude simply by saying that I will never lose sight of the most important project of all: Making people dance!
