Klaudia Gawlas è una figura straordinaria nell’universo della musica elettronica, una dj e produttrice che incanta il pubblico con maestria ed una innata capacità di trasformare il dance floor in un’esperienza unica. All’età di nove anni la musicista polacca ha imparato a suonare la tastiera e la chitarra e a tredici ha realizzato la sua prima produzione sul Commodore 64. Dopo essersi trasferita negli Stati Uniti per concentrarsi sugli studi di psicologia e trasmissione radiofonica, è tornata in Europa e ha fatto il suo ingresso sulla pista da ballo alla fine degli anni 2000.
Un viaggio attraverso suoni determinati e ritmi ipnotici, con un tocco distintivo capace di catturare l’essenza stessa della club culture. Klaudia non è solo una dj, ma una vera e propria artista, in grado di creare atmosfere coinvolgenti con una selezione eclettica ed una straordinaria abilità nel mixare tracce.

Ciao Klaudia, benvenuta. Vorrei soffermarmi subito su un concetto a te molto caro, quello del RAVE. Quali sono le caratteristiche che rendono memorabile un’esperienza così rivoluzionaria?
Buongiorno Andrea e grazie per avermi invitato a questa intervista. Se ricordo bene, è stato quando avevo solo 15 anni. Ho falsificato il mio tesserino scolastico per essere abbastanza grande da entrare alla festa. Cosa rende memorabile un rave, è una bella domanda. Per me, credo che condividere un’esperienza e uno spazio con tante persone che sono lì per lo stesso motivo, crei unità anche su larga scala. Scoprire nuovi DJ e suoni aiuta a creare un elemento di sorpresa e rende l’esperienza memorabile. Credo che tutti questi aspetti possano essere applicati a QUALSIASI rave o festa, quindi non è necessariamente qualcosa che può fare un locale o un promotore, ma ovviamente una grande line up, un evento ben organizzato, insieme a visual e produzione professionali, capaci di portare sempre gli eventi a un altro livello.
Quali sono i festival – conosciuti o meno che siano – ai quali ti senti particolarmente legata?
Credo che i migliori festival a cui ho partecipato finora siano stati l’Awakenings in Olanda o il Nature One in Germania. Gli eventi sono organizzati e gestiti in modo così esperto da rendere il tutto piacevole per i fan e gli artisti. Le aree ben studiate per entrare in contatto con le altre persone sono fondamentali, e il sound system di questi eventi è semplicemente incredibile. Questi festival sono enormi, ma in qualche modo riescono a farti sentire in contatto con la folla, e questo è qualcosa che non è sempre facile da ottenere, è magico.
Qual è stata l’esperienza più emozionante e significativa del tuo percorso musicale?
Credo che il mio concerto di debutto sia stato a New York, un posto davvero speciale visto che ho studiato negli Stati Uniti e che è stato il luogo in cui ho iniziato a far girare i dischi agli esordi. Quindi è sempre stato uno dei miei sogni più grandi tornare a suonare lì. È un momento che non dimenticherò mai.
La scena della musica elettronica è in continua evoluzione. Come fai a rimanere aggiornata sulle ultime tendenze e a trovare un equilibrio tra innovazione e autenticità?
Onestamente, non lo so sempre. Tutto ciò che faccio nasce dalla passione e amo trascorrere le mie giornate con la musica in tutte le sue forme. Mi piace andare a caccia di nuova musica e scoprire artisti e brani vecchi e nuovi, c’è sempre qualcosa di nuovo là fuori, basta cercarlo. Non seguo le tendenze, non l’ho mai fatto. Non mi sembra autentico e non è quello che voglio fare o suonare. Le tendenze cambiano, come ogni industria è in continua evoluzione, anche voi potete evolvervi e imparare, ma non dovete cambiare il vostro modo di essere e allontanarvi dal vostro sound. Per vedere cosa fa tendenza basta andare sui social media, non ci vuole molto a capire cosa sta prendendo piede in un determinato momento. Potete farne parte o meno, dipende dai vostri obiettivi personali.
Come vedi il ruolo delle donne nella scena musicale elettronica e quali sfide ritieni debbano essere ancora affrontate?
Penso che ora ci siano più donne nella scena che mai, ed è sempre e solo una cosa positiva. Non credo che questo sia un argomento di cui si parla molto in questi giorni, perché mi sembra che le donne stiano facendo bene, siamo headliner in tutti i migliori show e riceviamo il supporto dei media lungo il percorso. Certo, c’è un numero maggiore di uomini nell’industria, e a volte credo che pensino che le artiste ricevano più amore perché sono donne. Ma perché non può essere una questione di talento? Siamo indipendenti e forti, eppure a volte sento che ci viene ancora chiesto se siamo davvero in grado di fare la nostra musica, eccetera, e questo è un peccato. Senza dubbio questo fa sì che molti si interroghino sull’opportunità di avviare nuovi progetti che li appassionano. Questo settore è difficile per tutti: basta lavorare sodo ed essere fedeli a se stessi.
Hai collaborato con molti artisti nel corso degli anni. C’è qualche collaborazione che ti è rimasta particolarmente impressa?
Mi è piaciuto molto lavorare con Gary Beck. Sono un fan di lunga data delle sue produzioni da oltre 10 anni, quindi quando abbiamo pubblicato sulla sua etichetta è stato un grande momento della mia carriera. Suono ancora ‘Treasure’ in tutti i miei set, funziona bene su ogni dancefloor. La adoro.
C’è qualcosa di nuovo che stai progettando per la label “Illusion”? E quali sono le illusioni vissute nella tua vita?
Sì, il mio prossimo singolo uscirà a ottobre/novembre e sarà il terzo pubblicato su Illusion. Poi voglio iniziare a cercare di coinvolgere alcuni artisti nell’etichetta per i remix dei singoli che abbiamo pubblicato, e sono ansioso di coinvolgere alcuni nuovi arrivati. Per quanto riguarda il nome, ad essere onesti si tratta di un’illusione personale che ognuno può sperimentare, può essere un’immaginazione visiva di qualcosa di non reale. È un trucco che il cervello ama fare con noi, ed è questo che mi piace. Come la musica gioca brutti scherzi alla nostra mente quando la si ascolta, ognuno può sperimentare qualcosa di completamente diverso dallo stesso suono.
Quanto è importante il concetto di “Resilienza”? E cosa significa per te questo brano?
Negli ultimi anni ho attraversato alcuni periodi difficili della mia vita, uno dei quali è stato la perdita di entrambi i miei genitori. Sento che ora sono in un posto diverso e sono stata in grado di iniziare ad accettare le cose e di imparare a essere più positiva. Così ho acquisito “resilienza” nei confronti della vita. Da qui è nato il nome, che mi sembrava perfetto.
Come immagini il tuo futuro artistico?
Beh, tutto ciò che sappiamo è il presente, ma ho ancora molti sogni che voglio realizzare. Spero di continuare a suonare gli spettacoli che faccio ora, ma anche di suonare alcuni di quelli che sono nella lista dei miei sogni. Mi piacerebbe iniziare i miei eventi con Illusion e creare notti magiche che mi ispirino per quando tornerò in studio. Sognate in grande, perché i sogni possono diventare realtà.

Hello Klaudia, welcome. I’d like to jump right into a concept that is very dear to you, that of RAVE. Since you were 16, you’ve been attending these free and revolutionary events. What are some of the characteristics that make a rave experience memorable?
Good Morning and thank you for having me on this interview. So, if I remember correctly, it was when I was just 15 years old. I faked my school ID so I was old enough to get into the party. What makes a rave memorable, thats a great question. For me, I think sharing an experience and space with so many people who are there for the same reason, it creates unity even on a grand scale. Discovering new DJ’s and sounds helps to create an element of surprise and makes it a memorable experience. I guess all of these things can be applied to ANY rave or party, so its not nesessarily something a venue or promoter can do, but of course a great line up, with a well organised event, along with professional visuals and production always take events to another level.
Can you name some famous global festivals or unknown raves that you feel a strong connection to?
I think the best played I have played so far was Awakenings in Hollan or Nature One in Germany. The events are so expertly organised and run, it makes it enjoyable for fans and artists. Well thought out areas to be able to connect with other people is key, and the soundsystem at these events are just amazing. These festivals are huge, however they somehow still make you feel connected to the crowd, and that’s something that isn’t always easy to achieve, its magical.
What has been the most exciting or significant experience for you so far in your musical journey?
I think my debut gig was in New York, which was a really special place given that I studied in the US, and it was the place that I started to spin records in my early days. So it’s always been one of my biggest dreams to come back and play there. It’s a moment that I’ll never forget.
The electronic music scene is constantly evolving. How do you stay updated on the latest trends and how do you find a balance between innovation and techno authenticity?
Honestlty, I dont know always. Everything I do comes from passion and I love to spend my days with music in all forms. I love hunting for new music and discovering old and new artists and tracks, there is always something new out there, you just have to search for it. I do no follow trends, I never have. It feel unauthentic for me, and not what I want to make or play. Trends change, as any industry is constantly evolving, you can also evolve and learn but you do not need to change what you are about and stray from your sound. You can see what is trending by going on your socials media, it doesnt take much to see what it taking over at any given time. You can be a part of it, or not, it depends on your own personal goals.
The representation of women in electronic music has grown in recent years. How do you view the role of women in the scene and what challenges do you think still need to be addressed?
I think now that there is more women in the scene than ever before, and its only ever a positive thing. I don’t think that this is really something that a topic these days, as I feel like women are doing well, we are headlining all the best shows, and getting media support along the way. Of course, there is a larger number of men in the industry, and sometimes I feel they assume female artists get more love, because they are women. But why can’t it be about talent? We are independent and strong, yet sometimes I feel we are still questioned on whether we really can make our own music etc, which is a shame. No doubt it makes many maybe question themselves about starting new projects which they are passionate about. This industry is hard for everyone – just work hard and be true to yourself.
You have collaborated with many artists over the years. Are there any collaborations that have particularly stood out to you?
Oh I loved working with Gary Beck. I have been a long time fan of his productions for over 10 years, so when we released on his label it was a great moment in my career. I still play ‘Treasure’ in all of my sets, it works well for every dancefloor. I love it.
Is there something new that you are planning on your “Illusion”? And what are the illusions experienced in your life?
Yes, my next single is out in October / November and it will be the 3rd release on Illusion. I next want to start looking at getting some artists on the label for remixes of the singles we have released, and I am keen to get some newcomers involved. With the name, to be honest it’s about everyones own illusion which they may experience, it can be a visual imagination of something not real. Its a trick the brain likes to play on us, and thats what I like about it. Like the music plays tricks on our mind when you hear it, everyone can experience something completley different from the same sound.
How important is the concept of “Resilience”? And what does this track mean to you?
I have been through a few hard periods in my life in the last few years, one of those was losing both of my parents. I feel that now I am in a different place, and I have been able to start acceptign things and learning to stay more positive. So I have gained ‘resilience’ to life. Thats where the name was taken from, which I felt was perfect.
How do you envision your artistic future?
Well, all we know is the now but I still have many dreams I want to achieve. I hope that I continue to play the shows I am now, but also play some of those on my dream hit list. I’d like to start my own events with Illusion and create magical nights that inspire me for when I go back into the studio. Dream big, as dreams can come true.
