Chesster, talento italiano che ha conquistato la scena house di Londra e Los Angeles, ci ha raccontato di più dei sui progetti futuri e della sua idea di clubbing.

Victor Cester, nome d’arte Chesster, è sicuramente tra i selectors più interessanti del momento. La sua capacità di spaziare tra i generi, mantenendo il focus sul dancefloor e sul pubblico, rende il dj e produttore originario di Venezia tra gli artisti da tenere d’occhio in questo 2024.

La formazione come dj inizia nei primi anni 2000, poco prima dell’avvento dell’era digitale. Grazie alla sua passione diventa presto un frequentatore assiduo dei club nella sua zona ed inizia a dedicarsi alla ricerca dei dischi più interessanti per ampliare il proprio bagaglio musicale. Il trasferimento a Londra, nel 2014, segna un punto di sostanziale cambiamento nella sua carriera. Le sue produzioni, su label come Sake Records, Moan e l’ultimissima release su PIV Records del dj olandese Prunk consolidano la sua impronta musicale arrivando a condividere la console con talenti del calibro di Butch, Kenny Larkin, Timo Maas ed Alex Neri. Abbiamo avuto il piacere di parlare con lui del suo percorso artistico e dei prossimi progetti in arrivo in questo intenso 2024. Buona lettura!

Ciao Chesster, benvenuto su Parkett Channel, è un grande piacere averti come nostro ospite. Vorrei sapere come stai vivendo questo momento e come ti stai preparando per l’estate 2024.

Ciao ragazzi, grazie per l’invito! Finora il mio 2024 è stato molto positivo, un buon mix di serate, release e nuova musica che uscirà nei prossimi mesi. Passerò l’estate principalmente in Europa, visitando alcune delle mie città preferite per serate e collaborazioni in studio con alcuni produttori.

Il tuo EP su PIV “Tribute” si è rivelato un grande successo. Ti aspettavi questo tipo di accoglienza e cosa ha rappresentato quest’opera nell’evoluzione della tua identità artistica?

Sono da sempre un fan di PIV, che oggi è sicuramente uno dei brand più forti nella scena, quindi lavorarci insieme è davvero speciale. Continuo a ricevere un grande supporto sia dagli artisti stessi che dai vari fan e ascoltatori, il che è positivo perché mi motiva a lavorare sempre più verso gli obiettivi successivi.

Sei stato il primo italiano ad avere una release sulla PIV di Prunk e quest’estate suonerai allo showcase della label al Pacha di Barcellona. Cosa rappresenta per te questa etichetta e in che modo ti ha influenzato artisticamente il rapporto con Prunk?

Ho grande rispetto per i ragazzi di PIV, sia a livello professionale che personale. Il loro continuo supporto significa molto, e sono felice far parte del loro showcase a Barcellona quest’anno! Prunk è un artista incredibile e una persona ancora più splendida, abbiamo legato molto ed è un piacere averlo come amico. Sto imparando molto da lui, ha una cultura musicale pazzesca!!

Le tue tracce sono cariche di groove, trascinanti e focalizzate sulla pista da ballo. Hai un metodo fisso nel processo creativo o lavori ogni volta in modo diverso?

Il mio processo creativo varia a seconda della situazione. Gli eventi e il pubblico possono essere molto diversi di volta in volta (per fortuna), quindi mi piace mantenere un approccio aperto nella selezione della musica. Alla fine, la cosa più importante per me è offrire un’esperienza positiva e che il pubblico si diverta!

Nella tua musica non ci sono barriere di genere, cerchi sempre di incorporare molteplici influenze nel tuo sound mantenendo una certa riconoscibilità… c’è per te un marchio di fabbrica Chesster o credi ancora che il tuo sound sia in piena evoluzione?

Per quanto mi riguarda, è fondamentale approcciare la produzione con una mentalità aperta. Mi piace provare cose diverse senza dare troppo peso ai trend o alle label del momento, e solitamente è così che escono le cose migliori. Perciò si, credo che il mio sound continuerà ad evolversi e maturare nel corso del tempo!

Sei nato in Italia ma sei cresciuto artisticamente tra Londra e Los Angeles. Quanto è stata determinante questa scelta nella tua carriera e cosa ti manca dell’Italia di oggi?

Esatto! Sono nato a Jesolo (Venezia) e ho vissuto a Londra per circa 7 anni prima di spostarmi a LA nel 2022. Ogni città ha lasciato il suo segno durante le varie fasi della mia vita, ma devo dire che trasferirmi all’estero ha fatto la differenza per me. Il fatto di vedere posti nuovi, conoscere persone da tutto il mondo, viaggiare ed ampliare la mia rete di contatti, ha sicuramente cambiato il mio percorso e la mia prospettiva. Sono senz’alto felice di dove mi trovo ora, ma sono anche molto legato a casa e fortunatamente riesco ad essere li abbastanza spesso. Le cose che mi mancano di più sono la famiglia, gli amici di una vita, la cucina, e a volte anche lo stile di vita più tranquillo.

Un’altra collaborazione importante è quella con Oden&Fatzo che ha ospitato anche le tue produzioni su Sake. Che rapporto hai con loro e come è nato questo prolifico legame artistico?

Con Oden & Fatzo ci siamo conosciuti all’inizio del 2023 tramite il mio manager. Dopo aver ascoltato la mia musica mi hanno chiesto di rilasciare un EP sulla loro label, e successivamente mi hanno invitato in studio a Parigi un paio di volte. Nel tempo abbiamo stretto una bella amicizia, sono ragazzi eccezionali e stiamo lavorando ad un gran bel progetto assieme!

Sei un DJ che ha iniziato a suonare con i vinili e oggi si ritrova a mixare sempre con i CDJ. Ti è rimasto qualcosa di quell’approccio e come si svolge oggi la tua ricerca musicale per proporre set così eclettici?

Dipende. Il vinile è il formato con il quale ho iniziato da ragazzino, e al quale sono più legato. Continuo a frequentare i negozi di dischi per cercare e comprare musica di tutti i generi. Ma al giorno d’oggi abbiamo accesso ad un sacco di piattaforme come Beatport, Discogs, YouTube, lo stesso Instagram, ecc., che sono estremamente utili!

Oltre alla musica, un artista oggi deve curare numerosi aspetti, uno dei quali è il proprio storytelling, una narrazione del proprio vissuto che può essere collegata alla sua concezione della musica. Ti piace condividere la tua parte privata con i tuoi fan e come mantieni l’equilibrio tra Chesster artista e persona?

Sì, ad oggi condividere contenuti con il mondo non è solo importante ma anche essenziale per ottenere visibilità. A volte è persino più importante della musica stessa, ma questo è il mondo in cui viviamo oggi. Personalmente, mi piace condividere la mia musica e certi aspetti della mia vita, puntando a un buon equilibrio tra la produzione musicale – che comunque occupa la maggior parte del mio tempo – e l’attività online.

Ultima domanda..Quali saranno i tuoi prossimi progetti e dove potranno ascoltarti quest’estate i tuoi fan italiani?

Ho quattro uscite previste per il resto dell’anno, ed alcune collaborazioni con artisti a me vicini tra cui Oden & Fatzo, RUZE, Ranger Trucco, Kyle Walker e Romeo Louisa per citarne alcuni. Sto anche lavorando al lancio di una nuova etichetta con il mio amico THEOS, vi terremo aggiornati… Nell’arco dell’estate suonerò in alcune delle mie città preferite tra cui Barcellona, Londra, Amsterdam, Ibiza, mentre la mia prima serata estiva in Italia sarà il 30 giugno al CirQ, a Venezia. Non vedo l’ora!

Chesster, an Italian talent who has conquered the house scene in London and Los Angeles, told us more about his future projects and his idea of ​​clubbing.

Victor Cester is certainly among the most interesting selectors of the moment. His ability to range between genres, maintaining the focus on the dancefloor and the audience, makes the DJ and producer originally from Venice among the artists to keep an eye on in 2024.

His training as a DJ began in the early 2000s, shortly before the advent of the digital age. Thanks to his passion he soon became a regular visitor to the clubs in his area and began to dedicate himself to finding the most interesting records to broaden his musical baggage. The move to London in 2014 marks a point of substantial change in his career. His productions, on labels such as Sake Records, Moan and the latest release on PIV Records by the Dutch DJ Prunk, consolidate his musical imprint, sharing the console with talents of the caliber of Butch, Kenny Larkin, Timo Maas and Alex Neri. We had the pleasure of speaking with him about his artistic journey and the next projects arriving in this intense 2024.

Hi Chesster, welcome to Parkett Channel, it’s a super pleasure to have you as our guest. I would like to know how you are experiencing this moment and how you are preparing for summer 2024.

Hey guys, thank you for having me! 2024 has been great so far, a good mix of shows, releases and new music that will see the light in the coming months. I will be spending my summer mostly in Europe, hitting some of my favourite cities for shows and studio sessions with fellow producers.

Your EP on PIV “Tribute” turned out to be a great success. Did you expect this type of reception and what did this work represent in the evolution of your artistic identity?

Thanks! PIV is definitely one of the strongest brands on the scene, and I’ve been a fan since the early days, so ending up working together was special. I keep receiving incredible support from artists and fans alike, which is nice because it motivates me to work even harder towards my next goals.

You were the first Italian to have a release on Prunk’s PIV and this summer you will be playing their showcase at Pacha in Barcelona.. What does this label represent for you and how has the relationship with Prunk influenced you as an artist?

I have massive respect for the people at PIV both on a professional and personal level. Their continuous support means everything, and I’m excited to join them in Barcelona! Prunk is an incredible artist and possibly an even better person, we’ve become very close and I’m grateful to have him as a friend. I’m learning a lot from him, his knowledge is just nuts!!

Your tracks are groove-laden, driving and focused on the dance floor. Do you have a fixed method in the creative process or do you play differently every time?

My creative process varies depending on the environment. Luckily, events and crowds can be very different, so I like to keep an open-minded approach when it comes to my music selection. In the end, the most important thing for me is to provide a good experience, making sure that people are having a good time!

In your music there are no genre barriers, you always try to incorporate multiple influences into your sound while maintaining a certain recognisability…is there a Chesster trademark for you or do you still believe that your sound is in full evolution?

From my perspective, it’s really important to approach production with an open mind. I enjoy experimenting without being overly influenced by current trends or hot labels, and that’s usually when the best things happen! So yeah, I think my sound will keep evolving and growing with time!

You were born in Italy but grew up artistically between London and Los Angeles. How decisive was this choice in your career and what do you miss about Italy today?

That’s right! I was born in Jesolo (Venice) and I lived in London for about 7 years before moving to LA in 2022. Each city left its mark on me at different stages of my life, but I have to say, taking the leap to live abroad really changed everything for me. Exploring new places, meeting people from all over the world, traveling, and expanding my network – it completely shifted my perspective and path. While I’m grateful for where I am now, I’m also very attached to my home, but luckily I get to be there relatively often. What I miss the most are my family, my lifelong friends, good food, and even the laidback lifestyle sometimes.

Another important collaboration is the one with Oden&Fatzo who also hosted your productions on Sake. What relationship do you have with them and how did this prolific artistic connection arise?

I first connected with Oden & Fatzo through my manager at the beginning of 2023, when they heard some of my music and decided to release it on their label. After that, they invited me to their studio in Paris a couple times, and we became friends! I love those guys and we’re working on a super exciting project together!

You are a DJ who started playing with vinyl and today finds himself always mixing with DJs. Do you have anything left of that approach and how does your musical research take place today to propose such eclectic sets?

It really depends. Vinyl was the format I first learned with, and I’m still very much attached to that. I keep going to record stores for digging and buying records of all genres. But these days we have easy access to a whole lot of platforms such as Beatport, Discogs, YouTube, even Instagram, etc. which are extremely handy!

In addition to music, an artist today must take care of numerous aspects, one of which is his own storytelling, a narration of his own experience that can be linked to his conception of music. Do you like to share your private part with your fans and how do you maintain the balance between Chesster artist and person?

Yes, sharing content with the world is not only important but also essential to gain exposure in today’s music industry. Sometimes it’s even more important than the music itself, but that’s just the world we live in today. Personally, I do enjoy sharing my music and certain aspects of my life, aiming for a good balance between music-making – which takes most of my time anyway – and online presence.

Last question. What will be your next projects and where will your Italian fans be able to listen to you this summer?

I have 4 releases scheduled for the rest of the year, as well as some collab projects with artists and friends such as Oden & Fatzo, RUZE, Ranger Trucco, Kyle Walker and Romeo Louisa to mention a few. I’m also working on the launch of a new label with my homie THEOS, more on this later… 😉 Throughout the summer, I’ll be playing in some of my favorite spots including London, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Ibiza, while my first show in Italy will be on June 30th at CirQ, in Venice. Can’t wait!
