Alessandra BianchiniConosciamo da vicino Mha Iri, producer e DJ britannica dall’animo cosmopolita, che inizia a suonare quasi per caso, e che ha da poco pubblicato la sua seconda uscita su Drumcode.
Mha Iri è uno dei volti più significativi della scena techno odierna. Nata e cresciuta in UK, si è presto spostata in Australia, a Merbourne. Lì è riuscita a crearsi un proprio spazio nel mondo della techno, con la passione e una serie di fortunati eventi, iniziando ad accrescere la propria fama oltre i confini fisici.
Dall’Australia, Mha Iri si è trasferita a Edimburgo nel 2021. Una volta in Scozia sono arrivate le chiamate da grandi artisti di Paesi come Germania, Austria, Paesi Bassi, Francia, Ungheria, Scandinavia, Portogallo e Regno Unito tra gli altri, per avere la sua presenza in alcuni dei palcoscenici più blasonati del mondo.
Di seguito l’intervista.
Ciao Mha, piacere di conoscerti. Benvenuta su Parkett! È un onore parlare con te, anche in occasione del tuo nuovo EP “Bombay”, uscito il 12 aprile. Inizio chiedendoti: quando e come hai iniziato a suonare?
Grazie mille! Anche a me fa piacere parlare con voi. Ho iniziato a fare la DJ circa 10 anni fa ed è stato grazie al lavoro in un programma radiofonico a Melbourne. Avevamo DJ ospiti che a volte non si presentavano per il loro set e mi è stato chiesto di imparare suonare in loro assenza. È così che è iniziato tutto, e mi ha fatto crescere fino a dove sono ora.
Hai vissuto per 5 anni a Melbourne. Com’era la scena techno lì? Hai trovato un ambiente stimolante?
La scena techno era piuttosto piccola quando ho iniziato a suonare lì, ma è cresciuta nel tempo e sta ancora crescendo. Non vivevo direttamente in città, quindi non l’ho trovato così stimolante.
Come definiresti la tua musica e quali influenze hai avuto nel tempo?
La musica che faccio è proprio quella che sento in quel momento, e traggo qualche influenza da molti generi diversi e da artisti che mi piacciono, ma in generale faccio solo quello che sento.
Parliamo di Drumcode e del tuo rapporto con l’etichetta. È passato un anno dalla tua prima uscita con loro con ‘Never Go Back To Sleep’. Quanto è stato importante per te questo debutto?
È stata una grande pietra miliare per me e un sogno pubblicare lì, quindi è stato fantastico essere in grado di realizzare quel sogno.
Ora è il tuo secondo EP sempre su questa etichetta, “Bombay”, uscito il 12 aprile. Parlaci di questo EP e di cosa rappresenta per te.
Con Bombay volevo esplorare tracce più minimali che avessero ancora un ottimo drive, quindi l’ho mantenuto semplice; Existence si è concentrato sulla voce che ho registrato, così come sulla linea acid e arpeggiata.
Hai in programma un tour esplosivo: Awakenings, Junction 2, Tomorrowland e Mysteryland, tutti eventi davvero grandi. Cosa ti aspetti da queste date?
Non ho aspettative specifiche, perché quando mi aspetto qualcosa di specifico di solito non va in quel modo, quindi dirò invece che sono davvero entusiasta e non vedo l’ora di vederle tutte. È davvero un onore essere inclusa nella line up di festival così straordinari e ne sono grata.
Oltre alle date future, hai partecipato agli showcase di Drumcode al Watergate a Berlino e Drumsheds a Londra. Cosa ha significato per te far parte di questi grandi spettacoli?
Significa molto per me come artista che in Drumcode abbiano riposto fiducia in me per suonare per loro, ed entrambi i concerti sono stati molto divertenti.
Quali sono state le collaborazioni più rilevanti durante la tua carriera?
Lavorare con il mio management mi ha aiutato a tracciare chiaramente la mia carriera in modo che potessi andare avanti con fiducia ed è stata anche la mia rete di supporto.
Grazie del tuo tempo Mha! Ultima domanda, hai altri progetti in programma per il 2024 di cui vorresti/puoi parlarci?
Ho un paio di uscite entusiasmanti in programma e, a parte questo, scriverò musica e mi godrò questa bella vita.

Let’s get to know Mha Iri, a British producer and DJ, closely.
Mha Iri is one of the most significant faces of the techno scene. Born and raised in the UK, she soon moved to Australia, to Merbourne. There she managed to create her own space in the world of techno, starting to become known outside the country too.
From Australia, Mha Iri moved to Edinburgh in 2021. From here, different faces from countries like Germany, Austria, Netherlands, France, Hungary, Scandinavia, Portugal, United Kingdom started calling her to different prominent events of the scene world.
Hi Mha, nice to meet you. Welcome to Parkett! It’s an honor to talk to you, also on the occasion of your new EP “Bombay”, released on April 12th. I start by asking: when and how did you start playing?
Thanks so much and lovely to talk to you, too. I started djing about 10 years ago and it was due to working on a radio show in Melbourne. We would have guest djs that sometimes wouldn’t turn up for their set on air and I was asked to learn to dj and play in their absence. So that’s how it started and it grew arms and legs to where it is now.
You lived for 5 years in Melbourne. How was the techno scene like there? Did you find a stimulant environment?
The techno scene was pretty small when I started playing there but it grew over time and it is still growing. I wasn’t living directly in the city so I didn’t find it to be so stimulating.
How would you define your music and which influences have you had over time?
The music I make is just what I feel like at the time and I draw some influence from many different genres as well as artists that I like but generally I just do what I feel.
Let’s talk about Drumcode and your relationship with the label. It’s been a year since your first release with them with ‘Never Go Back To Sleep’. How important was this debut for you?
It was a big milestone for me and a dream to release there so its been amazing to be able to fulfill that dream.
Now it’s your second EP always on this label, “Bombay”, released on April 12th. Tell us about this EP and what it represents for you.
With Bombay I wanted to explore more minimal tracks that still have really good drive so I kept it simple; and Existence was focused around the vocal that I recorded as well as the arpeggiated acid bassline.
You have an explosive tour planned: Awakenings, Junction 2, Tomorrowland and Mysteryland, all really big events. What do you expect from these dates?
I don’t have specific expectations as I find when I expect something specific it usually doesn’t go that way so instead I’ll say I’m just really excited and looking forward to all of them. It’s really an honour to be included in the line up for such amazing festivals and I’m thankful for it.
In addition to the dates yet to come, you have participated in the Drumcode showcases at Watergate in Berlin and Drumsheds in London. What did being part of these great shows mean to you?
It means a lot to me as an artist that Drumcode are putting their trust in me to play for them and both shows were a lot of fun.
What have been the most relevant collaborations during your career?
Working with my management who have helped to map out my career clearly so I can move forward with confidence and also been my support network.
Thank you for your time, Mha! Last question, do you have other projects planned for 2024 that you want/can talk to us about?
I have a few exciting releases lined up and apart from that I’ll just be writing music and enjoying this beautiful life.
