A volte, l’esperienza del clubbing può andare oltre al semplice “andare a far serata”. Questo è quello che è successo conoscendo Alex e Chuck una sera di mezza estate dopo il loro set al Subbar da assoluti protagonisti di una giornata musicale organizzata dai ragazzi di Tasty Folk.
Da quel punto in poi è stato un colpo di fulmine (ça va sans dire, ndr) iniziando a entrare poco a poco nel loro universo musicale e anche personale. Alex e Chuck aka CDF (‘Coup de Foudre’) sono due DJ e produttori di origini francesi che vivono e lavorano ad Amsterdam che riescono a trasmettere nel loro lavoro la passione, cultura e contaminazione musicale rendendo ogni momento ricco ed indimenticabile. Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti su Parkett! Ci piacerebbe conoscervi un po’ meglio… Com’è iniziato il il vostro progetto CDF (‘Coup de Foudre’), quando e come vi siete ritrovati e detti “okay, iniziamo questo progetto insieme?”
I nostri percorsi si sono incrociati circa vent’anni fa al tempo del liceo in una piccola cittadina della Bretagna. In quegli anni, le nostre giornate erano piene di feste ed eventi nei club più di ore trascorse in console. E lì che è incominciata la nostra avventura musicale. La nostra passione per la musica ha visto i suoi germogli sul dancefloor, fiorendo gradualmente fino a quando uno dei due ha detto: “E perché noi no?”
Da quel momento in poi abbiamo iniziato le nostre ricerche e sperimentazioni di vari generi musicali individualmente ed in coppia. E’ stato indimenticabile quando una sera, al culmine di una sessione back to back, abbiamo incominciato a sentire una connessione molto profonda, una vera e propria scintilla che ha fatto partire la nostra avventura musicale insieme.
Raccontateci anche un po’ delle vostre origini. Cosa vi ispira maggiormente nel corso della vostra produzione e delle vostre performance?
Ci sentiamo entrambi fortemente radicati nel tessuto della cultura ‘black’ della musica elettronica, le nostre influenze partono dalle sonorità di Chicago e Detroit fino ad arrivare ai suoni Afro moderni. Nonostante il nostro suono sia contraddistinto da un forte carattere ed una forte identità, rimaniamo sempre fedeli alla nostra scoperta e sperimentazione sia in console che in studio.
Abbracciamo un approccio senza confini o paletti, evitando deliberatamente di limitare la nostra vena creativa e permettendo al panorama musicale in continua evoluzione di modellare ed ispirare le nostre avventure sonore.
Qual è la parte che vi piace di più del vostro lavoro insieme e come vi preparate ad una performance live?
Collaborare è davvero un’esperienza gratificante, soprattutto quando stiamo modellando l’identità distintiva che è CDF. La bellezza sta nella fusione dei nostri contributi individuali, portando sul tavolo sentimenti ed esperienze diverse. Questa fusione si traduce in un paesaggio sonoro unico che risuona sia con il nostro suono che con il pubblico durante le nostre esibizioni.
Il processo di preparazione per una performance live è un viaggio dinamico. Non è mai una routine statica; si evolve invece in base allo spettacolo specifico, ai nostri stati d’animo prevalenti e al tempo a disposizione. È un po’ una deliziosa montagna russa! Ci piace curare playlist che incapsulano vari stati d’animo come passo iniziale, perfezionando e adattando la nostra selezione man mano che ci avviciniamo alla data dello spettacolo. Questa flessibilità ci consente di adattarci e creare un’esperienza coinvolgente che si connette con l’energia del momento.
Vivete entrambi ad Amsterdam pur avendo origini francesi. Cosa vi ha portato il patrimonio musicale elettronico francese e cosa la capitale olandese sta dando al vostro sviluppo ed esperienza musicale?
Le nostre fondamenta musicali sono profondamente radicate nella nostra eredità francese, che inizialmente ci ha esposto a una vasta gamma di suoni. Il nostro viaggio è iniziato con una vasta sperimentazione disco, house francese, house classica e oltre. Questi generi hanno gettato le basi per la nostra esplorazione musicale, segnando i primi passi nella nostra evoluzione artistica.
Dopo il nostro trasferimento ad Amsterdam, la città si è rivelata uno scenario trasformativo per i nostri sforzi creativi. Qui abbiamo avuto una crescita significativa, approfondendo suoni elettronici, indie e acid. La scena dinamica e vibrante di Amsterdam, in particolare durante la pandemia, ci ha immerso nelle profondità dell’underground, modellando e perfezionando la nostra identità sonora.
Questa esplorazione e immersione sono state fondamentali nel creare il suono unico che risuona oggi nel club. Il nostro viaggio in corso prevede la creazione continua di un’ampia struttura, uno spazio in cui non solo esistiamo ma prosperiamo ed evolviamo, contribuendo al panorama in continua espansione della musica elettronica.
Parliamo un po’ della vostra prima release, “Not so Silent EP”. Attraverso le tre tracce possiamo identificare un perfetto abbinamento e fusione di alcuni reef acid, ritmi deep house che rendono il suono molto coinvolgente e ballabile. Qual è la storia di queste tracce?
La genesi del nostro EP si è svolta nel mezzo della pandemia, un periodo che ci ha spinto ad approfondire i regni della produzione e della sperimentazione. Con molto tempo a disposizione, ci siamo immersi nello studio, creando numerose tracce di generi diversi. Nel mezzo di questa esplorazione, è emerso un tema ricorrente: un ritorno a suoni familiari caratterizzati da linee acid, linee di basso groovy e un accenno di vibrazioni house. In retrospettiva, riconosciamo che questi elementi sonori rispecchiavano il nostro stato emotivo in quel periodo, sfumato di malinconia e desiderio per la pista da ballo.
Quando la morsa della pandemia si è allentata, ci siamo trovati riluttanti a pubblicare le tracce che avevamo meticolosamente creato. C’era un senso di attesa, un’esitazione senza una ragione chiara. Poi si è verificata una svolta con la creazione di una nuova traccia, giustamente chiamata “Not So Silent”. Si è rivelato l’anello mancante, il tassello finale che ha portato coesione al disco. Quando questo brano è stato selezionato da Loch Inn per la vetrina dei loro produttori/artisti, è servito come la conferma che stavamo cercando. Con due brani aggiuntivi scelti con cura, abbiamo finalmente pubblicato l’EP, due anni dopo la sua nascita.
Quali sono gli strumenti che utilizzate nel vostro studio?
Attualmente, il nostro setup incarna la semplicità, realizzato prevalentemente entro i confini del nostro studio di casa. Gli strumenti principali a nostra disposizione includono Ableton, integrato da un pizzico di Logic per sfumature specifiche. Il nostro arsenale creativo si estende alla tastiera midi Arturia e alla V Collection, una risorsa davvero straordinaria ricca di meraviglie musicali. Indubbiamente, la suite Soundtoys occupa un posto speciale nel nostro flusso di lavoro, contribuendo in modo significativo alla nostra tavolozza sonora.
Oltre alla nostra configurazione domestica, abbiamo avuto il privilegio di collaborare con un eccezionale duo di DJ di Amsterdam. Avventurarsi nel loro studio ci ha permesso di esplorare il regno della registrazione vocale e di indulgere nella gamma di tesori musicali che hanno a loro disposizione. È un’esperienza arricchente che aggiunge un’altra dimensione al nostro processo creativo.

C’è qualche progetto in cantiere che vorreste condividere con noi?
Alla fine del 2023, abbiamo presentato con orgoglio il nostro EP inaugurale, “Not So Silent”, sotto la nostra etichetta e collettivo con lo stesso nome. Questo progetto, concepito tra le sfide della pandemia, è pronto a diventare un protagonista nell’universo di CDF per tutto il 2024, presentando una miscela dinamica di podcast, nuove uscite ed eventi accattivanti.
All’inizio dell’anno, abbiamo orchestrato la prima serata in discoteca ad Amsterdam questo marzo insieme ai nostri fratelli e sorelle Black Cadmium e Sennes. Questo evento ha dato il tono ad un anno entusiasmante a venire.
A febbraio abbiamo dato un contributo degno di nota alla compilation Loch Inn, un brano a noi caro per la sua infusione di suoni e influenze ispirate a Detroit. Guardando al futuro, il 2024 promette una serie di uscite, inclusi remix di brani del nostro EP di debutto, collaborazioni con altri artisti e un nuovo progetto tanto atteso previsto per dicembre.
Con il passare dell’anno, siamo entusiasti di annunciare la nostra partnership con Making Patterns, che ora supervisionerà tutte le nostre performance. Unirsi a questa nuova famiglia segna un capitolo entusiasmante nel nostro viaggio e non vediamo l’ora di vedere dove ci porterà.

Sometimes the clubbing experience can go beyond simply going out. This is what happened meeting Alex and Chuck one midsummer evening after their set at Subbar as the absolute protagonists of a musical day organized by Tasty Folk.
From that point on it was love at first sight (ça va sans dire) starting to gradually enter their musical and also personal universe. Alex and Chuck aka CDF (‘Coup de Foudre’) are French DJs and producers who live and work in Amsterdam who manage to convey passion, culture and musical contamination in their work, making every moment rich and unforgettable. Hi guys, welcome to Parkett! We would like to get to know you better so… How did the CDF (‘Coup de Foudre’) project started, when did you meet up and think “okay, let’s make this together”?
Our paths intertwined nearly two decades ago during our college years in a small town in Bretagne. Back then, our days were filled with more parties and club adventures than hours spent behind the decks, yet that’s precisely where our musical journey began to unfold. The seeds of our passion for music germinated on the dancefloor, gradually blossoming until one pivotal moment when one of us exclaimed, “Why not us behind the decks…?”
From that point onward, we delved into playing and experimenting with various music genres, both individually and collaboratively. However, it was on one unforgettable night, during an extraordinary back-to-back session, that we felt an undeniable deep connection—a shared spark of creativity that impelled us to embark on this musical venture together.
Could you please tell us a bit more about your background as well? What is your main inspiration both for your productions and performances?
Both deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of Black Electronic music culture, our influences trace back to the origins in Detroit and Chicago, extending to the vibrant, African-influenced modern sounds. While our sound identity carries a distinctive signature, we remain committed to an ongoing journey of exploration and experimentation, whether it’s behind the decks or within the studio. Embracing a boundary-free approach, we deliberately avoid confining our creative expression, allowing the ever-evolving landscape of music to shape and inspire our sonic adventures.
What’s the part you most enjoy of this work together and how do you prepare a gig?
Collaborating is truly a rewarding experience, especially when we’re sculpting the distinctive identity that is CDF. The beauty lies in the fusion of our individual contributions—bringing diverse feelings and experiences to the table. This amalgamation results in a unique sonic landscape that resonates both with our sound and the audience during our performances.
The process of gearing up for gigs is a dynamic journey. It’s never a static routine; instead, it evolves based on the specific show, our prevailing moods, and the available time. It’s a bit of a delightful rollercoaster! We enjoy curating playlists that encapsulate various moods as an initial step, refining and tailoring our selection as we approach the performance date. This flexibility allows us to adapt and create an immersive experience that connects with the energy of the moment.
You both live in Amsterdam while having French roots. What did the French electronic music heritage brought you and what the Dutch capital is giving to your musical development and experience?
Our musical foundation is deeply rooted in our French heritage, which initially exposed us to a diverse array of sounds. Our journey commenced with extensive experimentation in Disco, French house, Classic house, and beyond. These genres laid the groundwork for our musical exploration, marking the initial steps in our artistic evolution.
Upon our relocation to Amsterdam, the city proved to be a transformative backdrop for our creative endeavors. Here, we underwent significant growth, delving further into electronic, indie, and acid sounds. The dynamic and vibrant Amsterdam scene, particularly during the pandemic, immersed us in the depths of the underground, shaping and refining our sonic identity.
This exploration and immersion have been pivotal in crafting the unique sound that resonates in the club today. Our ongoing journey involves the continuous creation of a broad framework, a space where we not only exist but thrive and evolve, contributing to the ever-expanding landscape of electronic music.
Let’s talk a bit about your first release, “Not so Silent EP”. Through the three tracks we can identify a perfect match and blend of some ‘acid’ reefs, deep house beats that makes the sound very spicy and danceable. What’s the story behind the tracks?
The genesis of our EP unfolded in the midst of the pandemic, a period that prompted us to delve into the realms of production and experimentation. With an abundance of time on our hands, we immersed ourselves in the studio, crafting numerous tracks across diverse genres. Amidst this exploration, a recurring theme emerged—a return to familiar sounds characterized by acid lines, groovy basslines, and a hint of housy vibes. In retrospect, we recognize that these sonic elements mirrored our emotional state during that time—tinged with melancholy and a yearning for the dancefloor.
As the pandemic’s grip loosened, we found ourselves hesitant to release the tracks we had meticulously created. There was a sense of waiting, a hesitation with no clear reason. Then, a breakthrough occurred with the creation of a new track, aptly named “Not So Silent”. It proved to be the missing link, the final piece that brought cohesion to the EP. When this track was selected by Loch Inn for their producers/artists showcase, it served as the validation we had been seeking. With two additional carefully chosen tracks, we finally released the EP, two years after its inception.
What is your production gear?
Presently, our setup embodies simplicity, crafted predominantly within the confines of our home studio. The primary tools at our disposal include Ableton, complemented by a dash of Logic for specific nuances. Our creative arsenal extends to the Arturia midi keyboard and the V Collection, a truly remarkable resource laden with musical wonders. Undoubtedly, the Soundtoys suite holds a special place in our workflow, contributing significantly to our sonic palette.
In addition to our home setup, we’ve had the privilege of collaborating with an exceptional DJ duo from Amsterdam. Venturing into their studio space has allowed us to explore the realm of vocal recording and indulge in the array of musical treasures they have at their disposal. It’s an enriching experience that adds another dimension to our creative process.

Do you have some upcoming projects that you would like to share with us?
In late 2023, we proudly unveiled our inaugural EP, “Not So Silent”, under our own label and collective of the same name. This project, conceived amidst the challenges of the pandemic, is poised to take a center stage in CDF’s universe throughout 2024, featuring a dynamic blend of podcasts, fresh releases, and captivating events.
Kicking off the year, we orchestrated the first club night in Amsterdam this March alongside our brother and sister, Black Cadmium and Sennes. This event set the tone for an exciting year ahead.
In February, we made a noteworthy contribution to the Loch Inn compilation, a track we hold dear for its infusion of Detroit-inspired sounds and influences. Looking ahead, 2024 promises an array of releases, including remixes of tracks from our debut EP, collaborations with other artists, and an eagerly anticipated new project slated for December.
As the year unfolds, we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Making Patterns, who will now oversee all our future bookings. Joining this new family marks an exciting chapter in our journey, and we can’t wait to see where it leads.
