Come stai?

Ciao Martina, grazie.

Forse mi trasferirò in Germania in futuro, chissà.

MRD

Sono assolutamente d’accordo sui “New Order sotto anfetamine”.

Joy Division, New Order, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, The Smiths, The Cure.

Ti avrei visto bene all’Haçienda.

Senza dubbio!

A proposito di influenze e riferimenti, uno dei tuoi brani più conosciuti è sicuramente Save Me Another Time.

Riguardo l’Italo Disco c’hai azzeccato. Save Me Another Time diciamo che è un “calderone” dove c’è un po’ di tutto – new wave, house, techno, disco, dark wave.

Adoro Save Me Another Time.

Avevo già pubblicato Matter Of Time, una traccia già abbastanza cheesy. Ma con Save Me Another Time volevo spingermi oltre (ride).

È davvero interessante notare come musica e cinema possano influenzarsi reciprocamente.

Sicuramente Lione, Parigi e Berlino… ah, e Glasgow. Gli ascolti migliorano a vista d’occhio, mi fa molto piacere.

MRD

ENGLISH VERSION

MRD is one of the most exciting artists on the contemporary electronic scene. We have asked him a few questions about his latest album “Løvehjerte”, his unique style that blends new wave, dark techno, hardcore, post-punk and his strong connection with his dog Daffy.

Kent Tonning is an eclectic Norwegian producer. With the MRD project, the “Wunderkindmerges the sounds and vibes of an evening at the Haçienda in the ’80s with contemporary hard techno experiments. The new album Løvehjerte, released on May 12th by the label Live From Earth Klub, is the strongest expression of the distinctive sound that has made MRD internationally recognizable.

Hi Kent, nice to meet you and welcome to Parkett! How are you?

Hi Martina, thank you. I’m doing great, but I’m very tired. I came back from Germany two nights ago, I was there for some tour dates. I’m trying to sleep as much as I can. I am now in my apartment in Oslo where I have been living for 7 years.

I saw you playing live at the Junkyard club in Dortmund on Thursday, May 18, your B2B with Bauernfeind was incredible. You have a lot of dates in Germany that’s why I thought you lived there.

Oh, you were there? Great! That was really cool. I had a lot of fun and loved the crowd. I am often touring both in Germany and in France, my music is very appreciated there. Maybe I’ll move to Germany in the future, who knows.

Your music is rich in ’80s-’90s elements, new wave, dark wave influences and hard techno basslines. Is there a word or an expression that describes your music style the best? (Norwegian is fine too)

Someone once told me that my music sounds like “New Order on terrible amphetamines(laughs) – I think it’s my favorite expression. Most people consider my tracks a concentrate of euphoria and nostalgia, two keywords of the MRD project. When I’m in the studio everything happens very naturally so I can’t precisely define my music. I rely a lot on what my listeners tell me.

I really like the expression “New Order on terrible amphetamines”. I guess the English new wave band is an inspiration for you. Are there other artists who have particularly influenced your musical taste and your way of making music?

The British post-punk and new wave scene of the late ’70s – ’80s definitely has a great influence on my production. Joy Division, New Order, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, The Smiths, The Cure. I really admire their sense of songwriting. It’s really fun to sit in the studio and bring this world together with techno, I’ve been doing it for 4 years now and it’s amazing how there are always “happy surprises” in the studio while I’m producing. The fusion of these genres creates a special atmosphere, I love it. This is how my alter ego MRD was born, driven by the desire to experiment and blend different musical genres together that I’m crazy about.

I could have pictured you perfectly at the Haçienda.

Obvious thing!

Speaking of influences and references, one of your most well-known tracks is certainly Save Me Another Time. I sense some Depeche Mode influence in it, especially in your voice. And the intro reminds me of Italo Disco hits. Am I wrong?

Honestly, this is very funny because I started to listen more to Depeche Mode a couple of years ago. Sure, I’ve always appreciated some of their tracks, but I never listened to their entire discography, for example. But I think they are an inspiration for me too, maybe they were even before, unconsciously. I love their sound. They are an incredible band and I’m glad to have started listening to them more frequently and getting to know their music better.

About Italo Disco you got it right, absolutely. 100%. I love disco and I love especially Italo disco, I have a weakness for it. So that’s a great reference of that song. I also like obscure Italian films with great soundtracks. Save Me Another Time is a “big pot” full of everything – new wave, house, techno, disco, dark wave.

I love Save Me Another Time. Definitely one of my favorite songs from the MRD project.

I also like it, it sounds amazing! I think I produced it in about 6 hours. I wanted to create a really cheesy track, cheesier than Matter of Time. I wanted to see how cheesy I could get (laughs). And then it was like “ey this song is pretty good”. So I decided to put it on the EP FLOWERS OF FLESH AND BLOOD and I thought “either people fucking hate it or they will love it”. And it turns out it’s my biggest song.

That’s a funny story! On May 12, you published your latest album Løvehjerte (I hope I pronounced it right). Congratulations! In the press release you stated that the album title is a tribute to the film Brødrene Løvehjerte (The Brothers Lionheart) based on the homonymous book by Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren. Why was this story particularly inspiring for you?

Great question! I love that movie, I watched it not that long ago and was struck by the directing. It has such a magical, beautiful way of how it was filmed and I really love the scenery. The story is very beautiful and melancholic. This atmosphere reminded me of the beginnings of MRD, the first tracks I published and what MRD represents to me and my listeners. I am madly in love with nature and everything related to it and I like to bring these almost bucolic scenarios into my music. Like a synesthetic experience. The album cover is an analogue picture I took where there are two birds flying over the river, an image that very much reminded me of the cinematography of Brødrene Løvehjerte. So I felt like the album really faded into the magical world of Brødrene Løvehjerte, like they were related somehow.

It’s really interesting to see how music and cinema can influence each other. Are the themes of Brødrene Løvehjerte present in your lyrics as well?

Yes. The thematic core of the album includes love stories, the fear of loneliness and overcoming this fear, being able to be alone and appreciating it. Losing a friend, breaking up with a girlfriend, finding new friends… it’s the circle of life. The story of Brødrene Løvehjerte makes me think of the love I feel for my dog Daffy, we are very close. He’s 12 years old, he’s getting older. When I started taking care of him I was still young, but being “his father” helped me growing up and being more responsible. It really changed me. I really love animals, I think the love for animals is the most loyal love a human can experience. I’m sure that when Daffy is no longer here I will meet him on the other side – in a magical, summery place, a place which reminds me of the atmosphere of Brødrene Løvehjerte. The album is dedicated to him. Do you want to meet Daffy?

He’s so cute, you are so sweet together! But tell me… what is your favorite track from Lovehjerte?

Mh it’s hard to say, but I would choose Creek. There is something about Creek… I like its composition, its vibes. That was the last song I produced for the album and it was like done right before I had to deliver Lovehjerte. I really wanted it to be on the album!

There are many dates planned in the Løvehjerte tour, including two in Italy. One in Turin (27.05 – the interview took place before the date in Turin) and one in Taranto (29.07). Are you happy to be playing in Italy again?

Absolutely! I enjoying playing for the Italian crowds, they are a mild version of the French crowds (laughs). They are so friendly and polite. I’ve never been to Turin, but last September I have been to Taranto. I loved it a lot, the weather was really warm and the water of the sea was so hot. The promoter taught me a saying from Puglia “the water is so hot that you can boil pasta in it” (laughs). It was exactly like that.

I can imagine it as I come from a city close to Taranto. Do you plan to perform live and sing during your next concerts?

Yes, we’re working on it. The only thing I’m working on right now is the logistics, there will also be a band on stage with me playing instruments. There will definitely be live performances during the Løvehjerte tour. We can’t wait to do it, but it really takes a lot of planning to make everything work perfectly.

Are you satisfied with the feedback that Løvehjerte is receiving?

Feedback is great. I don’t like to constantly “push” my music, I do it now and then. I put it out and let the music do the job. I don’t want to “scream” that my album is there, I let everything happen naturally.

It’s also your first album with the label Live From Earth, which has a roster of many appreciated and well-known artists in the international techno scene. How did this collaboration start?

Last year I was in Berlin and Julian Muller, a great friend of mine, invited me to have a beer on the set of a music video he was shooting with CAIVA. There I met Jakob, the label manager. He showed a lot of interest in my work and asked me if I wanted to collaborate with him – I couldn’t be happier. Then I met all the other members of the Live From Earth family, we get along great. Every time we play together at events is such a blast. Then, we’re a group of artists so different from each other, each one has their own style and their own “character”. LFE is really a great reality.

You’re touring the world with your music. But where is your bigger fan base located?

Definitely Lyon, Paris and Berlin… oh, and Glasgow. There are a lot of listeners there. And it’s constantly growing, it’s a really good thing.

What’s in the future for MRD?

Touring, touring, touring… and figuring out when to start with live performances. Then, there will certainly be more shows with the band, I will release more music and continue this strange and fun journey.

We’ll support you on this “strange and fun journey” and wish you the best. Thank you so much for the interview, Kent. It was a pleasure. See you next time!

Thank you so much for the great questions, it was a very interesting conversation. ‘Till next time!
