Giovanni PapiniIntervista con uno dei pochi artisti underground figli della capitale argentina: Ubbah. Un percorso fatto di perseveranza e amore per la musica che lo ha portato sui più grandi palcoscenici del mondo.
Ubbah è Lucas Uberto, nato a pochi chilometri da Buenos Aires nel giugno del 1994. Un artista che fin da bambino ha conosciuto la musica e l’ha fatta sua – a dieci anni padroneggiava perfettamente il pianoforte.
La sua è carriera non è fondata solo sull’elettronica, ma si pone e stabilizza su questo genere dal 2008. Sedici anni dopo, il nome di Ubbah trova sostegno da artisti di fama mondiale, e fluttua intorno a una dimensione sonora profonda e oscura, quasi ipnotica.
Uno studio della melodia identificativo, che gli ha aperto le porte di grandi etichette discografiche, tra cui Afterlife nel 2022, con “System Failure” per il VA Unity, Pt. 3, e più di recente Diynamic a febbraio 2024, con l’uscita del suo ultimo singolo “Signs” uscito nell’EP “Four To The Floor 33“.
Ma Uberto non si ferma qui, vuole ancora di più.
L’intervista.
Ciao Lucas, grazie per la tua disponibilità. Come è iniziato per te questo 2024?
Alla grande. Quest’anno stanno accadendo grandi cose. Sto lavorando a nuova musica e a nuovi progetti.
Inizio con una domanda un po’ personale: perché Ubbah? Che significato aveva questo nome quando hai deciso di farlo tuo?
I miei amici mi chiamavano Uba per via del mio cognome Uberto. Così quando stavo per pubblicare il mio primo EP (San Francisco Murderer, Fade Up Music, 2014, ndr) avevo bisogno di un nome artistico. Ho finito per usare quello, ma scritto in modo più originale.
Il tuo ultimo lavoro “Signs”, uscito su Diynamic, era già un successo prima della sua uscita. Parlaci di questo brano a parole.
Questo brano è il risultato di un mix di suoni retrò, techno melodica ed elementi organici. Stavo cercando di costruire qualcosa di originale.
L’8 e il 9 marzo il tour di Afterlife Latin America farà tappa a Buenos Aires, e tu sarai presente anche quest’anno. Cosa significa poterti esibirti nel tuo Paese, di fronte a centinaia di migliaia di spettatori, in uno degli eventi di maggior successo del pianeta?
Naturalmente sono grato di poterne far parte. È sempre un onore per me rappresentare l’Argentina in una line up così importante.

Se ti chiedessi qual è la cosa più lontana dalla musica da cui trai ispirazione, cosa diresti? E perché?
Non ne sono sicuro, traggo ispirazione da così tante cose. Ho ascoltato e suonato diversi tipi di musica nel corso degli anni. Inoltre ho fatto parte di gruppi rock. Direi che è un mix di tutte le mie esperienze con la musica.
Parlaci del progetto della tua etichetta discografica, della direzione artistica e del perché hai voluto crearla. È un modo per dare spazio a un genere specifico o per avere più libertà espressiva?
L’idea della label è nata dalla necessità di pubblicare musica più spesso, e anche per spingere musica un po’ diversa da quella che le etichette oggi cercano.
E puoi darci qualche indizio su altri progetti che hai in cantiere?
Un altro progetto che ho è quello di tornare ai vecchi tempi, e ricominciare con i live set.
Fin dall’infanzia, hai vissuto abbracciando la musica, non solo quella elettronica. Una caratteristica fondamentale per gli artisti di ogni epoca e genere. Se potessi tornare indietro nel tempo, cosa diresti al Lucas bambino?
Tornerei indietro solo per dire a me stesso: “Vai e credi in te stesso e nei tuoi gusti. Non concentrarti su nient’altro”. Ma non cambierei il mio percorso musicale e le scelte che ho fatto. Cambierei le scelte esterne che hanno ritardato il raggiungimento dei miei obiettivi.
Concludo chiedendoti: qual è il sogno di Lucas Uberto?
Il mio sogno è di avere successo fino alla pensione, e anche di costruire una comunità di persone che seguano la mia stessa visione e il mio stesso gusto per la musica.

Hi Lucas, thank you for your availability. How did this 2024 start for you?
Great. Big things are happening this year. I’ve been working on new music and new projects.
I start with a somewhat personal question: why Ubbah? What meaning did this name have when you decided to make it your own?
My friends used to call me Uba because of my last name Uberto. So when I was about to release my first EP (San Francisco Murderer, Fade Up Music, 2014, ed) I needed an artistic name. I ended up using that but written in a more original way.
Your last release “Signs” released on Dynamic was already a hit before its release. Tell us about this track in words.
This track was the result of mixing retro sounds, melodic techno and organic elements. I was trying to build something original.
On 8 and 9 March, Afterlife’s Latin America Tour will stop in Buenos Aires and you will be there again this year. What does it mean to you to be able to perform in your country, in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators, at one of the most successful events on the planet?
Of course I’m thankful for being part of it. It’s always an honor for me to represent Argentina in such a big line up.

If I asked you the furthest thing from the music you draw inspiration from, what would you say? And why?
I’m not sure, I grab inspiration from so many things. I’ve been listening and playing different types of music over the years. Also I’ve been in rock bands. I would say is a mix of all my experiences with music.
Tell us about your label project, the artistic direction and why you wanted to create it. Is it a way to give space to a specific genre or to give you more freedom of expression?
The idea of the label comes due to the necessity of releasing music more often and also to push music a little bit different than what labels nowadays are looking for.
And can you give us some hints about other projects you have in the pipeline?
Another project I have is to go back to my old days and start with live sets again.
Since childhood, you have lived embraced music, not just electronic music. A fundamental characteristic for artists of all eras and genres. If you could go back in time, what would you say to the child Lucas?
I will go back just to say to myself: “Go and believe in yourself and your taste. Don’t focus on anything else”. But I wouldn’t change my music path and choices I’ve taken. I would change external choices that delayed me reaching my goals.
Let me conclude by asking you: what is the dream for Lucas Uberto?
My dream is to be successful till I retire, also to build a community of people that follows my same vision and taste for music.
