RedazioneI Modular Project sono un duo dall’animo romantico, alla ricerca di un equilibrio tra l’elettronica analogica e disco.
Modular Project, all’anagrafe Alberto Iovine (28) e Alessandro Fumagalli (26), con la loro profonda dedizione e passione per la musica elettronica analogica, fanno parte di questa nuova generazione di produttori che portano avanti le origini del movimento.

Dal 2014 i Modular Project si dedicano alla ricerca del proprio stile musicale tra elettronica, disco e influenze new wave e techno.
Italiani, il primo con origini del sud e il secondo del nord con una vena tedesca, si conoscono da colleghi come resident indipendenti presso il party milanese “Vision”. Da due anni il Duo è Resident al Volt Club di Milano.
Nel 2017 i Modular Project fondano “Nothing is Real” la loro etichetta discografica e ora gestiscono anche lo “Studio Tesla” a Monza.
Abbiamo voluto fare una breve, ma intensa, chiacchierata con loro.
La descrizione della vostra “Nothing is Real”, neonata etichetta discografica sorella della bresciana “Rebirth” di Daniele Contrini aka Shield, è decisamente concettuale e in linea con la tendente ricerca contemporanea di un riconoscimento della percezione individuale.
Esprimete tematiche come la percezione della realtà e la manipolazione dell’informazione nel mondo globale contemporaneo; suggerite la musica come chiave d’espressione e il suono come mezzo di comunicazione e ricerca. Sembrerebbe che con Nothing is Real siate in una vera e propria missione. Come e con chi la portate avanti?
È sempre stato un progetto che faceva parte dei nostri sogni nel cassetto e finalmente siamo riusciti a realizzarlo. Più che una vera e propria missione è il desiderio di creare qualcosa di unico e diffondere il nostro stile senza seguire le tendenze e le sonorità del momento.
Pensiamo che l’unicità sia la chiave per distinguersi al giorno d’oggi. Il tutto lo portiamo avanti con la collaborazione di Shield, che ci aiuta nella parte promozionale, anche se poi le decisioni finali sono sempre nostre; soprattutto per quanto riguarda la direzione musicale della label che è piuttosto dark ma con un’impronta disco.
Finora abbiamo prodotto Jay Shephard di Londra di cui a fine febbraio pubblicheremo un remix da parte dell’argentino Alejandro Mosso (collaboratore anche di Cocoon Recordings) e Nhar di Parigi di cui pubblicheremo un EP a maggio. Prevediamo una release ogni due, tre mesi.
Alphaville è l’ultimo EP che avete pubblicato sulla vostra etichetta, ricevendo ottimi feedback dalla seconda generazione di maestri della scena electro-house underground come Tiefschwarz, Adriatique, Acid Pauli, Guy J e molti altri.
Si percepisce una certa intesa con il romanticismo germanico tendenzialmente dark wave e il ritmo israeliano tendenzialmente progressive, eppure vi è uno spirito indistinguibilmente italiano. Quali sono le sonorità che lo definiscono?
Le sonorità del passato che ritornano. La new wave, che ha sempre influenzato il nostro gusto musicale, si fa sentire in maniera prepotente in questo EP. Queste tracce sono indubbiamente molto importanti per noi perchè segnano un cambio abbastanza radicale del nostro stile.
Siamo molto contenti del risultato finale e soprattutto apprezzamenti da artisti di questo calibro ci fanno capire che ci stiamo muovendo nella direzione giusta.
Il clubbing si è affermato come uno stile di vita, una sottocultura elettro-organica globale unita dalla passione per la musica elettronica.
Quali sono gli elementi che hanno appassionato voi e quali dei vostri bisogni ha soddisfatto?
Il clubbing è parte integrante della nostra vita ormai da anni, grazie sempre e solo alla musica elettronica. Ci piace molto l’idea che molte tendenze nascano proprio da questo fenomeno che mai come adesso è in piena espansione.
Non ci riteniamo dei ravers anche perchè non amiamo particolarmente gli after o fare le 10 del mattino (haha), però ammettiamo che il clubbing ha soddisfatto a pieno un nostro bisogno primario che è stato quello di evadere dalla quotidianità.
Modular Project rappresenta il suono di Milano, la città della moda e degli affari. Ritenete che la composizione delle allegre sonorità disco, che con maestria ricamate su sognanti melodie e intrecciate a basi dal ritmo incalzante, descrivono l’anima della vostra città?
Sicuramente Milano ha influenzato molto il nostro stile musicale. Da qui, come Berlino, parte tutto e lo stesso vale per la moda. Infatti Milano, ma in generale l’Italia, ha visto nascere tra i dj e producers più forti in circolazione e di questo siamo veramente fieri. Il suono che proponiamo in questo momento ha comunque un’impronta italiana ma che si ritrova molto anche in sonorità Nord Europee.

Modular Project is a Duo with a romantic soul searching for balance between analogic and disco electronic music.
Alberto Iovine (28) and Alessandro Fumagalli (26) aka Modular Project, with their deep dedication and passion for analog electronic music, are part of this new generation of producers who carry forward the origins of the movement. Modular Project, since 2014 they have dedicated themselves to the research of their own musical style between electronic, disco, new wave and techno influences.
Italians, one originary from the southern while the other from the northern, they met as independent residents at milanese party “Vision”. Since 2016, Modular Project is Resident at Volt Club Milano, in 2017 they founded “Nothing is Real” their Record Label and now they also manage “Studio Tesla” in Monza. We are honored to present this very serious Duo in this in-depth interview.
The description of your “Nothing is Real”, the new sister label of Brescia’s “Rebirth” by Daniele Contrini aka Shield, is clearly conceptual and in line with the contemporary search for a recognition of individual perception. Expressing topics such as the perception of reality and the manipulation of information in the global contemporary world; suggesting music as a key for expression and sound as a media of communication and research. It looks like that with “Nothing is Real” you are on a mission. How and with whom do you carry it out?
It has always been a project that was part of our dreams and we finally managed to make it happen. we are pushed by the desire to create something unique and spread our style without following the trending sounds. We think that uniqueness is the key to stand out today. We carry it on with the help of Shield, which helps us in the promotional part, even if the final decisions are always ours; especially as regards the musical direction of the label that is rather dark but with a disco mark. So far we have produced Jay Shephard from London from whom we will publish a remix by Argentinean Alejandro Mosso (also collaborator with Cocoon Recordings) at the end of February and an EP by Nhar from Paris in May. A release is scheduled every two-three months.
Alphaville is the last EP you have published on your label; receiving excellent feedbacks from the second generation of underground electro-house masters such as Tiefschwarz, Adriatique, Acid Pauli, Guy J and many others. There is a certain empathy with the tendentially darkwave Germanian romanticism and the Israelian tendentially progressive rhythm, yet there is an indistinguishable Italian spirit. What are the sounds that define it?
The sounds of the past that are coming back. The new wave, that has always influenced our musical taste, makes itself feel overwhelmingly in this EP. These tracks are undoubtedly very important for us because they mark a fairly radical change in our style. We are very happy with the final result and above all appreciation by artists of this caliber make us understand that we are moving in the right direction.
Clubbing has established itself as a lifestyle, a global electro-organic subculture united by the passion for electronic music. What are the elements that have fascinated you and which of your needs has it satisfied?
Clubbing has been an integral part of our life for years, thanks always and only to electronic music. We really like the idea that many trends are born from this phenomenon that now, as never before, is in full expansion. We do not define ourselfs ravers because we do not particularly like after-hours or to stay up until 10 am (haha), but we admit that clubbing fully satisfied on of our primary needs: to escape from everyday life.
Modular Project represents the sound of Milan, the city of fashion and business. Do you think that the composition of the cheerful disco sounds, that you master to embroid on dreamy melodies and wave to increasing beat bases, describes the soul of your city?
For sure Milan has definitely influenced our musical style. From here, like from Berlin, everything starts and the same goes for fashion. In fact Milan, but in general Italy, has seen birth among the strongest DJs and producers in circulation and we feel proud of this. The sound we are offering at this moment, however, has an Italian mark but which is also very common in Northern European sounds.
