Abbiamo fatto quattro chiacchiere con Gianni di Bernardo in attesa della release di “Returnless”, il suo primo album ufficiale in uscita il 13 giugno. Il disco inaugura Wild Inside, la label di cui Gianni è proprietario e fondatore: “È come se avessi costruito uno spazio tutto mio, dove la musica, l’estetica e il messaggio si uniscono in qualcosa che sento profondamente“.
Classe 1994, Gianni di Bernardo nasce a Napoli, dove inizia la sua carriera da DJ all’età di 16 anni per poi avvicinarsi anche alla produzione. Dopo numerosi singoli ed EP, notti nei club e un tour in America appena concluso, Gianni è pronto a fissare uno di momenti più importanti della sua carriera con l’inaugurazione della sua label e l’uscita di “Returnless”, che verrà pubblicato in due diverse release, la prima fissata il 13 giugno.
Vi proponiamo in anteprima l’ascolto di “Love In Space”, in cui il distintivo sound hard-techno di Gianni si fonde al suo desiderio catartico di utilizzare la musica, non solo come strumento di celebrazione dell’energia e dell’edonismo, ma anche come via d’uscita dai tunnel più bui della nostra intimità.
Ciao Gianni, benvenuto su Parkett. Dopo diversi singoli ed EP siamo in attesa di ”Returnless”, il tuo primo album ufficiale in uscita su Wild Inside. Come stai vivendo questo momento speciale, tra la release del disco e l’inaugurazione della tua nuova label?
Grazie per l’invito, è un piacere essere qui. È un momento davvero intenso ma anche pieno di emozioni. “Returnless” è il mio progetto più personale ad oggi, e poterlo pubblicare sulla mia label, Wild Inside, mi permette di avere il pieno controllo creativo su tutto. È come se avessi costruito uno spazio tutto mio, dove la musica, l’estetica e il messaggio si uniscono in qualcosa che sento profondamente. C’è tensione, certo, ma anche tanta gratitudine.
In questo viaggio non sono stato solo: ho avuto la fortuna di collaborare con artisti che stimo moltissimo come KNTRVRLST e TNMN, e altri nomi che preferisco non spoilerare adesso. È un grande onore lavorare con persone così talentuose, che hanno saputo arricchire il progetto con la loro visione. In più, ricevere un remix da Luca Agnelli per “Love in Space” è stato un vero privilegio. Il suo tocco ha dato nuova forma alla Track, mantenendo intatta l’emozione ma spingendo ancora di più sull’energia.
La prima parte di ”Returnless” uscirà il 13 giugno. Perché hai scelto di pubblicarlo in due release, pur mantenendo l’unicità del progetto?
Volevo che ogni traccia avesse lo spazio per respirare e lasciare il segno. “Returnless” è un viaggio profondo, non solo una raccolta di tracce da dancefloor. Dividerlo in due parti mi permette di raccontare una storia in due atti. La prima uscita esplora territori più oscuri, malinconici e introspettivi, mentre la seconda sprigiona un’energia più diretta e pensata per il dancefloor. È tutto parte dello stesso mondo, ma con due stati d’animo diversi.
Cosa compone il DNA musicale di ”Returnless” e quali elementi del tuo background emergono nel disco?
Il DNA di “Returnless” è fatto di techno scura e potente, ma anche di emozioni sincere. Dentro ci sono le notti nei club, i viaggi e momenti molto personali, come la perdita di mia sorella, che ha ispirato le tracce più intime. È un disco che nasce da un’urgenza espressiva, in cui convivono ritmi aggressivi e melodie.
Si è da poco concluso il tuo tour tra Stati Uniti e Sud America. In cosa il clubbing americano ti è sembrato diverso da quello europeo? Prendendo in considerazione Nord e Sud America, territori culturalmente molto diversi, quali differenze interne hai notato e a quale scena ti senti più affine?
Il pubblico americano è molto curioso, aperto. In Nord America ho sentito grande rispetto per l’artista, una voglia di scoprire anche sonorità non convenzionali. In Sud America, invece, ho trovato una passione travolgente, pura energia. Le persone vivono la musica con il corpo e con l’anima. Se dovessi scegliere una scena a cui mi sento più affine, direi quella sudamericana: lì ho percepito una connessione fortissima.
Cosa ti da equilibrio quando la vita da DJ sembra togliertelo?
La musica stessa, paradossalmente. Ma anche la solitudine, i momenti in cui posso staccare tutto e tornare a me. Ho imparato che il silenzio è una cura, e anche i miei due gatti mi aiutano a ricordarmi chi sono quando torno a casa. Cerco di ritagliarmi spazio per respirare, e ritrovare l’essenza oltre i viaggi, i palchi, l’adrenalina.
Sei nato e cresciuto a Napoli, da sempre territorio fertile per i musicisti italiani. Ci sono degli artisti della tua Città da cui trai maggiore ispirazione, nella scena techno e non?
Assolutamente sì. Napoli ha un’energia unica, difficile da spiegare ma facile da sentire. Artisti come Rino Cerrone sono stati una grande fonte di ispirazione per me, soprattutto nei primi anni. Ma mi lascio contaminare anche da mondi musicali lontani dalla techno: nomi come Enzo Avitabile o Pino Daniele mi hanno insegnato il valore della melodia, dell’anima nella musica. Napoli è un mosaico sonoro, e io ne porto dentro ogni frammento.
Come vedi l’evoluzione della scena techno di Napoli e cosa ti auguri per il futuro della tua Città?
Vedo una nuova generazione coraggiosa, che sperimenta, che osa. La scena si sta evolvendo, si sta aprendo a contaminazioni e progetti indipendenti. Mi auguro più spazi per la cultura underground, più connessioni tra artisti e soprattutto più libertà creativa. Napoli merita di essere riconosciuta non solo per la sua storia, ma anche per la sua visione del futuro.
Proponiamo in anteprima l’ascolto di ”Love in Space”, in cui la ruvidità e l’energia dell’hard- techno si fondono alla dolcezza di un vocal che apre le porte a una dimensione nuova, trascendente. Come l’hai prodotta e cosa speri di trasmettere a chi la ascolterà?
“Love in Space” è nata dalla voglia di creare qualcosa di diverso all’interno del mio set sonoro. Ho lavorato su un contrasto netto: una base hard-techno molto dritta e fisica, con un vocal che porta un messaggio chiaro, legato al superare momenti difficili e rialzarsi. Non è solo una traccia da pista, ma qualcosa che può anche farti riflettere mentre balli. Inoltre, credo che ognuno possa adattarla a un momento personale di amore, di forza o di rinascita, a seconda di quello che sta vivendo.
Concludo ringraziandoti e chiedendoti dove potremo incontrarti quest’estate per ascoltare finalmente ”Returnless” con un buon sound-system?
Grazie a voi per lo spazio e l’attenzione. Quest’estate porterò “Returnless” in diversi festival e club, sia in Europa che oltreoceano, e naturalmente anche in Italia, con date a Napoli, Taranto, Roma e tante altre. Tutti gli aggiornamenti saranno disponibili sui miei canali social.

Hi Gianni, welcome to Parkett. After several singles and EPs, we are waiting for “Returnless”, your first official album coming out on Wild Inside. How are you experiencing this special moment, between the release of the album and the inauguration of your new label?
Thank you for having me, it’s a pleasure to be here. It’s a really intense moment but full of emotions. “Returnless” is my most personal project and being able to release it on my label, Wild Inside, allows me to have full creative control over everything. It’s as if I’ve built my own space space where music, aesthetics and message blend into something I feel deeply. There’s tension, of course, but also a lot of gratitude.
I haven’t been alone on this journey: I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with artists I respect a lot, like KNTRVRLST, TNMN and other names that I prefer not to reveal now. It’s a great honor to work with such talented people, who have been able to enrich the project with their vision. Also, receiving the remix of “Love in Space” from Luca Agnelli was a real privilege. His touch reshaped the song, keeping the emotion intact but pushing the energy even further.
The first part of ”Returnless” will be released on June 13th. Why did you choose to release it in two phases, while still keeping the project unique?
I wanted each track to have space to breathe and leave its mark. “Returnless” is a deep journey, not just a collection of dancefloor tracks. Splitting it into two parts allows me to tell a story in two acts. The first release explores darker, more melancholic and introspective territories, while the second release unleashes a more direct and dancefloor-oriented energy. It’s all part of the same world, but with two different moods.
What makes up the musical DNA of ”Returnless” and what elements of your background emerge on the record?
The DNA of “Returnless” is made of dark and powerful techno, but also of honest emotions. There are club nights, travels, and very personal moments, such as the loss of my sister, which inspired the more intimate tracks. It’s a record that comes from an expressive urgency, in which aggressive rhythms and melodies coexist.
Your tour between United States and South America has just ended. How did American clubbing seem different to you from the European one? Thinking about North and South America, culturally very different territories, what internal differences have you noticed and which scene do you feel closest to?
The American public is very curious, open. In North America I felt great respect for the artist, a desire to discover even unconventional sounds. In South America, on the other hand, I found an overwhelming passion, pure energy. People live music with their body and soul. If I had to choose a scene that I feel closest to, I would say the South American one: there I felt a very strong connection.
What gives you balance when life as a DJ seems to take it away from you?
The music itself, paradoxically. But also solitude, the moments in which I can disconnect from everything and return to myself. I have learned that silence is a cure, and even my two cats help me remember who I am when I return home. I try to carve out space to breathe, and find the essence beyond the travels, the stages, the adrenaline.
You were born and raised in Naples, which has always been fertile ground for Italian musicians. Are there any artists from your city that inspire you the most, in the techno scene and beyond?
Absolutely. Naples has a unique energy, difficult to explain but easy to feel. Artists like Rino Cerrone have been a great source of inspiration for me, especially in the early years. But I also let myself be contaminated by musical worlds far from techno: names like Enzo Avitabile or Pino Daniele have taught me the value of melody, of the soul in music. Naples is a mosaic of sound, and I carry every fragment of it within me.
How do you see the evolution of the techno scene in Naples and what do you hope for the future of your city?
I see a new brave generation, that experiments, that dares. The scene is evolving, it is opening up to contaminations and independent projects. I hope for more space for underground culture, more connections between artists and above all more creative freedom. Naples deserves to be recognized not only for its history, but also for its vision of the future.
We offer a preview of “Love in Space”, in which the roughness and energy of hard-techno blend with the sweetness of a vocal that opens the doors to a new, transcendent dimension. How did you produce it and what do you hope to convey to those who will listen to it?
“Love in Space” was born from the desire to create something different within my sound set. I worked on a clear contrast: a very straight and physical hard-techno base, with a vocal that carries a clear message, linked to overcoming difficult moments and getting back up. It is not just a dance floor track, but something that can also make you reflect while dancing. Furthermore, I believe that everyone can adapt it to a personal moment of love, strength or rebirth, depending on what they are experiencing.
I conclude by thanking you and asking where we can meet you this summer to finally listen to “Returnless” with a good sound system?
Thank you for the space and attention. This summer I will be taking “Returnless” to various festivals and clubs, both in Europe and overseas, and of course also in Italy, with dates in Naples, Taranto, Rome and many others. All updates will be available on my social media channels.
