“Xiangliu” is a release that aligns with a forward-thinking artistic approach, shaped under the visionary identity of Kris Vango, a pseudonym of nomadic artist Kristen Howard. The project is rooted in a conceptual foundation that aims to map the solar system through audio, visual and performative language, seeking to investigate the dynamic relationship between cosmos and psyche, between matter and immateriality, and between organic and synthetic forms of expression. The release embodies a continuation of a creative vision launched in January 2019 with the project “Ard,” focusing on exploring archetypes and mythologies of planetary forces and reinterpreting their symbolic power through sound as a tool of personal mastery rather than submission to temporal constraints.

“Xiangliu” incorporates this conceptual dimension into its sonic identity through the use of progressive house and minimal techno elements, constructing an immersive, slowly evolving sound architecture. The rhythmic foundation is built through an understated yet precise percussive pattern, calibrated to maintain a steady hypnotic groove without overpowering the other elements. The rhythm unfolds with deliberate spacing, allowing micro-textures and tonal fragments to resonate within the track’s structure. Subtle rhythmic fluctuations generate a sense of forward momentum while preserving an atmospheric suspension, reflecting both movement and contemplation.

Synth work plays a central role in shaping the narrative of the release. The synthesis is composed of originally designed layers, interacting with binaural frequencies and field recordings gathered during pilgrimages to sites such as monuments, shrines and sacred spaces. These elements introduce a natural yet spectral dimension, creating a dialogue between the earthly and the extraterrestrial. The synth patterns evolve with fluid motion, avoiding abrupt or decorative peaks and instead leaning towards gradual modulation, filtered harmonic waves and spectral echoes that enrich the immersive quality of the listening experience.

Atmospherically, “Xiangliu” builds a liminal space where sound appears suspended between ritual and science, technology and instinct. The aesthetic leans toward introspective electronic storytelling, where each sonic detail contributes to an expansive and cinematic environment. The field recordings are integrated not as external samples but as textural ingredients that enhance the conceptual depth, transforming environment into narrative.

“Xiangliu” represents a high-quality release that aligns sound, meaning and technique into a coherent artistic vision. Its intricate rhythmic structure, refined synthesis and immersive atmosphere make it a work we are pleased to host and review on our webzine, as an example of electronic music that merges conceptual identity with sonic craftsmanship.
