Rilasciato sulla sua etichetta Elephant Moon in questi giorni, One Against Time, il nuovo album di John Dimas, unisce tutta la gamma di influenze che hanno contraddistinto il suo percorso artistico dagli esordi fino ad oggi; dalle prime pubblicazioni su Time Has Changed Records e Bass Culture, fino alle più recenti su Overall Music, Claap e Raum…musik.

Ma non solo, One Against Time di John Dimas analizza concretamente tutti i generi e sotto generi che lo hanno influenzato durante la sua vita personale.
Le 14 tracce sono descritte infatti proprio da John Dimas come il riflesso del suo “viaggio personale su questo pianeta”. In grado di esplorare così sonorità dalla Electro alla Minimal, dalla Deep House alla Downtempo, ciò che emerge da One Against Time è un vero e proprio viaggio all’interno di una delle menti più brillanti della scena elettronica europea.
La capacità di John Dimas di persuadere ritmi insoliti, gli permette di mantenere una sorta di studiata distanza dalle sonorità orientabili esclusivamente al club; e il risultato è un album mai scontato e ricco di variazioni, una pietra miliare indispensabile in grado di mettere a nudo la molteplicità tecnica ed emotiva dell’arte di John Dimas.

Ascoltando le tue produzioni a partire dalle prime pubblicazioni su Time Has Changed Records si percepisce la tua rilettura in chiave futurista del concetto di Techno, House Music, Minimal e non solo. Una ritualità che sei riuscito a mantenere omogenea attraverso quasi tutto il tuo percorso artistico. Quali sono le origini e le influenze musicali grazie alle quali è nata la musica assolutamente riconducibile a John Dimas?
Crescere negli anni ’90 ha avuto un enorme impatto sul mio gusto musicale, ho iniziato a suonare nei primi anni 2000 e sono stato influenzato dal suono di quei tempi, che è stato il culmine dell’evoluzione della musica elettronica e una miscela di tutti i diversi stili: Chicago House, Detroit Techno, l’intero suono del Regno Unito, Breakbeat e IDM.
Dopo i numerosi EP che hanno fatto innamorare tutti, da “Living Lies” su “La Vie En Rose”, “State Of Mind” su “Dame-Music” per arrivare ai più recenti “Out Of Sight” su “Overall” e “Multiverse” su “Raum…musik”, finalmente arriva l’album che tutti stavamo aspettando: “One Against Time”, prodotto dalla tua etichetta “Elephant Moon”. Parlaci di lui, dalle 14 tracce fino alle grafiche, e se ti va, svelaci anche qualche curiosità?
Dopo tutte le uscite che hai appena menzionato, è stato il mio ultimo EP Telexistence sull’etichetta di Raresh Metereze a giugno dello scorso anno a farmi capire che avevo bisogno di fare un album. È sempre stato qualcosa che avevo programmato di fare a un certo punto, e mi è sembrato che fosse arrivato il momento giusto, quindi ci ho provato.
L’artwork della copertina è in realtà un collage originale che ho creato utilizzando alcuni dei miei libri di fantascienza retrò. Amo tutte le cose legate allo spazio ed è stato un tocco molto personale per me. Le tracce dell’album riflettono il mio viaggio su questo pianeta, alti e bassi, tutti diversi ma con un tema comune. Ogni pezzo rappresenta un momento della mia vita e dimostra tutte le influenze che ho avuto musicalmente.
Come primo album dopo una lunga produzione di EP e Remix, lo senti il peso delle aspettative che hai alzato intorno a “One Against Time”?
Ci sarà sempre un certo senso di aspettativa, ma questo è stato qualcosa che ho fatto per me stesso, per il mio percorso creativo e per esprimermi al 100% come artista. Se altre persone trovano qualcosa che amano, questo è solo un bonus.
Al giorno d’oggi ogni artista ha il suo sistema di ricerca musicale personale, cosa cerca e come si comporta John Dimas quando compra musica?
Trascorro molto tempo su Discogs e cerco tesori nei negozi di dischi in ogni città in cui suono. È anche importante uscire e ascoltare altri buoni DJ per farsi ispirare. Sono molto fortunato perchè vivere a Berlino mi offre molte opportunità per fare esattamente questo.
Esiste un’artista o una serie di artisti che ami a tal punto da poterli identificare come i responsabili della tua formazione come DJ/Producer ?
I soliti sospetti, ovviamente, Zip, Raresh e Ricardo Villalobos, oltre a Francesco Del Garda e Nicolas Lutz. Sento sempre cose nuove quando questi ragazzi suonano e mi sento molto motivato a fare shopping il giorno dopo.
Una domanda che spesso facciamo agli artisti che abbiamo il piacere di ospitare su Parkett è quella di darci la propria definizione personale di Dj. Ci dai la tua?
Il DJ è il ponte che incanala la musica nella folla per dargli un’esperienza dal vivo. Immagina di ascoltare gli stessi dischi senza che un DJ li suoni: non ha lo stesso impatto. Il DJ crea le emozioni, l’energia e la trama per le orecchie dei discotecari, così quando tornano a casa hanno grandi ricordi di tutto il percorso musicale.
Dopo “One Against Time”, in uscita in questi giorni, puoi darci qualche anticipazione sui tuoi progetti futuri?
In realtà ho un altro progetto chiamato “Secret Universe” dove ho già pubblicato il mio primo mini album nel 2016 e sto per finire un follow up nei prossimi mesi.
È elettronica Ambient, quindi mi dà davvero un altro sbocco per la mia creatività e mi tiene molto bilanciato per produrre la musica da club. Sarò anche protagonista dei 20 anni della compilation “Raum…musik”, che uscirà questa primavera.
Sono anche in procinto di lavorare su alcuni nuovi EP e remix per alcune etichette di amici, ma nessuna data di rilascio è ancora confermata.

When we listen to your productions, starting from your first releases on Time Has Changed Records, we can feel your interpretation of techno, house, and minimal to a futurist key — a ritual that you’ve managed to maintain through all your artistic course. What are the origins and the influences of your style?
Growing up in the 90’s had a huge impact on my musical taste, I started to DJ in the early 2000’s and was influenced by the sound of those times, which was the peak of the evolution of electronic music and a blend of all different styles from Chicago House, Detroit Techno, the whole UK sound, breakbeat and IDM.
After a lot of EPs that made everyone fall in love, from Living Lies in La Vie En Rose, State of Mind on Dame-Music, to the most recent Out of Sight on Overall and Multiverse on raum…musik — finally it’s arriving, the album that everyone was waiting for: One Against Time, released on your label Elephant Moon. Can you talk about it? Starting from the 14 tracks that compose it, the artwork and the ideas behind it?
After all the releases you just mentioned, it was my last EP Telexistence on Raresh’s label Metereze in June last year that made me realise I needed to do an album. It has always been something I had planned on doing at some point, but it felt like the right time had come so I just went for it. The cover artwork is actually an original collage I created using some of my retro sci-fi books. I love all things space related and it was a very personal touch for me. The tracks on the album all reflect my journey on this planet, ups and downs, all different but still with a common theme. Each piece represents a moment in my life and demonstrates all the influences I have had musically.
After a long series of EPs and remixes, do you feel the weight of expectation or pressure around your debut LP?
I mean of course there is always going to be a certain sense of expectation but this was something I did for myself, for my own creative path and to express myself 100% as an artist. If other people find something they love in it, that is just a bonus.
Today every artist has a personal method of musical research. What does John Dimas search and how does he feel when he approaches and produces music?
I spend a lot of time on Discogs and hunting for treasures in records shops in every city I play in. It’s also important to go out and listen to other good DJ’s to get inspired. I am very lucky that living in Berlin provides me many opportunities to do exactly that.
Are there any artists that you love so much that you can identify them as strong influences of your formation as a DJ and/or producer?
The usual suspects of course Zip, Raresh and Ricardo Villalobos as well as Francesco Del Garda and Nicolas Lutz. I always hear new things when these guys play and it makes me feel very motivated to go record shopping the next day.
A question that we often ask to artists that we have the pleasure to host in Parkett is: can you give us your definition of a DJ?
A DJ is the bridge that channels the music into the crowd to give it a live experience. Imagine if you listened to the same records without a DJ playing them it doesn’t have the same impact. The DJ creates the emotions, the energy and the story for the clubbers ears so when they go back home they have great new memories of the whole musical journey.
After One Against Time is released in February, can you give us any news about your other upcoming projects?
I actually have another project called Secret Universe which I released my first mini album on in 2016, I’m about to finish a follow up over the coming months. It’s ambient electronica so really gives me another outlet for my creativity and keeps me very balanced for producing the club music. I am also going to be featured on the 20 years of Raum…Musik compilation, which is coming out this spring. I am also in the process of working on some new EP’s and remixes for some friends’ labels but no release dates are confirmed yet.
