Bolognese di nascita, Umberto! è un DJ e produttore che si distingue per il suo approccio originale e sperimentale alla musica elettronica. 

Inizia il suo percorso nel 2002, spinto dalla passione per i dischi rari e per la cultura house. Dieci anni più tardi fonda 320KB Music, etichetta che si guadagna fin da subito il sostegno di artisti di riferimento come Ricardo Villalobos, Zip, Raresh e Francesco Del Garda. 

Dal 2015 al 2020 porta avanti NUDGE, progetto di editing e produzione condiviso con DJ P!sta, che diventa un vero laboratorio creativo. Nel 2022 sceglie di intraprendere la strada solista: in appena un anno pubblica due EP che riscuotono grande attenzione, con brani come Losing My Mind, This is a Dream e Lazy Diamond suonati in festival molto noti come il Sonar e Sunwaves. 

Oggi concentra la sua ricerca sonora nella nuova label digitale 1-800-HOTCALLS, un concept innovativo che unisce release musicali e interazione diretta con il pubblico attraverso una hotline dedicata (+1 518 800 3031). Un progetto che conferma la sua capacità di innovare e di guidare la scena elettronica italiana verso nuove direzioni, in collaborazione con diversi artisti emergenti e internazionali. 

Ciao Umberto, benvenuto su Parkett Channel, è un piacere averti con noi oggi. Il tuo viaggio nella cultura musicale parte dal 2002 con la collezione di dischi rari: qual è stato il vinile che ti ha fatto dire “ok, questa è la mia strada”? 

Ciao ragazzi, piacere mio! Sentire Azzido Da Bass – Dooms Night (Timo Maas Remix) mi ha fatto capire che quella era la mia strada, o ancora meglio la mia casa. Il remix di Dooms Night non gratifica l’orecchio ma coinvolge il corpo, gioca nella mente con una struttura lontana dai virtuosismi tipici dell’arrangiamento tradizionale. È pura frequenza, rivoluzione e ritmo, io la chiamo body music. 

Dopo anni passati ad ascoltare, suonare e selezionare musica, quando e perché hai sentito l’esigenza di iniziare a produrre i tuoi brani? 

Produco da sempre come esercizio personale per conoscere da vicino la musica che colleziono. Amo visceralmente programmare le drum-machine, perdermi nell’interfaccia dei sintetizzatori e scoprire suoni speciali da incastrare in nuove trame. 

Nel 2012 fondi 320KB Music, sostenuta da grandi nomi come Villalobos e Raresh. Cosa pensi che abbia convinto artisti di quel livello a credere nella tua etichetta? 

Vedo troppe produzioni nei negozi e poche davvero nelle borse dei DJ, io mi limito a pubblicare dischi che vorrei avere con me il giorno del party. Penso che sia questo approccio genuino a colpire artisti di quel livello. 

Sì, sicuramente. Dopo anni di collaborazioni e collettivi, hai intrapreso il progetto solista. Qual è stata la sfida più grande nel metterti al centro della scena senza filtri? 

La sfida più grande è sempre con me stesso. Il peggiore nemico per un creativo è l’autosabotaggio, per questo serve maturare disciplina e capacità di valorizzare il proprio percorso. 

Mi trovi completamente d’accordo. I tuoi brani Losing My Mind, This is a Dream e Lazy Diamond hanno risuonato nei grandi festival. Come vivi l’emozione di sentire la tua musica in contesti internazionali di quel livello? 

Sempre più persone stanno scoprendo la mia musica e questo non fa che alimentare la mia fame. Sentire i miei brani nei grandi contesti internazionali non è un traguardo, ma un punto di partenza per spingere ancora più in alto l’asticella. 

Recentemente hai lanciato la tua nuova label digitale 1-800-HOTCALLS, con una hotline reale per ascoltare le prossime uscite. Non solo musica, ma anche un modo di creare un contatto diretto e quasi vintage con il pubblico. Come hanno reagito i fan alla possibilità di “chiamarti” per scoprire le release? 

Vedo molta curiosità e soprattutto sorpresa. La hotline è un gesto volutamente retrò che oggi, paradossalmente, sembra futuristico. Chi chiama vuole scoprire un’uscita prima ancora di trovarla online: è un contatto intimo, diretto e quasi proibito. Il numero è +1 (518) 800 3031.  

Quante collaborazioni hai già messo in cantiere per 1-800-HOTCALLS e quante senti che mancano per completare la visione che hai in mente? 

La visione di 1-800-HOTCALLS è chiara fin dalla prima release. Spesso le etichette perdono troppo tempo nel tentativo di trasformare una traccia forte in un intero EP: così si perde slancio e, molte volte, il lavoro non va in porto. Con 1-800-HOTCALLS ho scelto un approccio diverso: pubblico singoli, caldi e appena sfornati. Le collaborazioni in corso sono con Lourene, DJ Rou, Die Angst, Fastman, Jamahr, Ricky Montanari, Flavio Vecchi, Ferrari, Bisan e molte altre in arrivo. 

Guardando avanti, vedi 1-800-HOTCALLS svilupparsi anche dal vivo?  

Non c’è ancora nulla in programma, ma ho già in mente un’estensione più esplicita di 1-800-HOTCALLS che prenderà corpo sul dancefloor, dove musica e desiderio si intrecciano senza filtri. 

Ultima domanda prima di lasciarci. Hai già avuto occasione di programmare delle date per la prossima stagione? Ci sono contesti particolari in cui ti entusiasma suonare di più?  

Certamente, dopo questa estate sono arrivate molte richieste e ora è il momento di tornare a fare ciò che so fare meglio dietro al DJ booth. Queste sono le prime date confermate di quest’anno, vi aspetto cavalli!

Bolognese by birth, Umberto! is a DJ and producer who stands out for his original and experimental approach to electronic music. 

He began his journey in 2002, driven by a passion for rare records and house culture. Ten years later, he founded 320KB Music, a label that immediately gained support from key artists such as Ricardo Villalobos, Zip, Raresh, and Francesco Del Garda. 

From 2015 to 2020, he carried forward NUDGE, an editing and production project with DJ P!sta, which became a true creative laboratory. In 2022, he chose to pursue a solo career: in just one year he released two EPs that drew great attention, with tracks like Losing My Mind, This is a Dream and Lazy Diamond being played at major festivals such as Sonar and Sunwaves. 

Today, he focuses his sound research on the new digital label 1-800-HOTCALLS, an innovative concept that combines music releases with direct interaction with the audience through a dedicated hotline (+1 518 800 3031). A project that confirms his ability to innovate and to lead the Italian electronic scene towards new directions, in collaboration with various emerging and international artists. 

Hi Umberto, welcome to Parkett Channel, it’s a pleasure to have you with us today. Your journey in music culture began in 2002 with your collection of rare records: what was the vinyl that made you say, “ok, this is my path”? 

Hi guys, the pleasure is mine! Hearing Azzido Da Bass – Dooms Night (Timo Maas Remix) made me realize that this was my path—or even better, my home. The remix of Dooms Night doesn’t just gratify the ear but engages the body, it plays with the mind through a structure far from the typical virtuosity of traditional arrangements. It’s pure frequency, revolution, and rhythm—I call it body music. 

After years of listening, playing, and selecting music, when and why did you feel the need to start producing your own tracks? 

I’ve always produced as a personal exercise, to get to know more closely the music I collect. I’m viscerally in love with programming drum machines, losing myself in synthesizer interfaces, and discovering special sounds to weave into new textures. 

In 2012 you founded 320KB Music, supported by great names like Villalobos and Raresh. What do you think convinced artists of that level to believe in your label? 

I see too many productions in record shops and too few really making it into DJs’ bags. I simply publish records that I would want with me on the day of a party. I think it’s this genuine approach that strikes artists of that level. 

Yes, for sure. After years of collaborations and collectives, you started your solo project. What was the biggest challenge in putting yourself at the center of the scene without filters? 

The biggest challenge is always with myself. The worst enemy for a creative person is self-sabotage, which is why it’s necessary to develop discipline and the ability to value one’s own journey. 

I completely agree. Your tracks Losing My Mind, This is a Dream, and Lazy Diamond have resonated at major festivals. How do you experience the emotion of hearing your music in such international contexts? 

More and more people are discovering my music, and this only fuels my hunger. Hearing my tracks in major international contexts is not a finish line, but a starting point to raise the bar even higher. 

Recently you launched your new digital label 1-800-HOTCALLS, with a real hotline to preview upcoming releases. Not just music, but also a way of creating a direct and almost vintage connection with the audience. How did fans react to the possibility of “calling you” to discover new tracks? 

I see a lot of curiosity and especially surprise. The hotline is a deliberately retro gesture that today, paradoxically, feels futuristic. Those who call want to discover a release even before finding it online: it’s an intimate, direct, and almost forbidden contact. The number is +1 (518) 800 3031. 

How many collaborations have you already planned for 1-800-HOTCALLS, and how many do you feel are still missing to complete the vision you have in mind? 

The vision of 1-800-HOTCALLS has been clear since the very first release. Too often, labels waste time trying to turn one strong track into a full EP: in doing so, momentum is lost and many times the work doesn’t come through. With 1-800-HOTCALLS I chose a different approach: I release singles—hot and freshly baked. Current collaborations include Lourene, DJ Rou, Die Angst, Fastman, Jamahr, Ricky Montanari, Flavio Vecchi, Ferrari, Bisan, and many more to come. 

Looking ahead, do you see 1-800-HOTCALLS developing into a live format as well? 

Nothing is scheduled yet, but I already have in mind a more explicit extension of 1-800-HOTCALLS that will take shape on the dancefloor, where music and desire intertwine without filters. 

Last question before we wrap up. Have you already scheduled dates for the upcoming season? Are there particular contexts that excite you more to perform in? 

Absolutely, after this summer many requests came in, and now it’s time to get back to doing what I do best—behind the DJ booth. These are the first confirmed dates of this year, see you there, horses!
